Though we don't have specific hadith about when it was revealed, the subject matter strongly suggests that it happened during the final period of the Prophet's ﷺ stay in Makkah. The tone of the discourse indicates that, at this point, the opposition to the Message had become so intense that the Prophet ﷺ and his followers were no longer tolerated among them. It seemed unlikely that the opponents would ever understand or accept the Prophet's ﷺ Message. These aspects indicate that this revelation occurred in the last phase of the Prophet's ﷺ time in Makkah. Additionally, the absence of any mention or hint about emigration (Hijrah) from Makkah in this Surah places it before the Surahs that do mention it. Since we've already covered its historical background in Surah 6 (The Grazing Livestock) and Surah 7 (The Elevations), there's no need to repeat it here.
This surah focuses on extending an invitation to the Message, providing guidance, and issuing a warning. In the initial verses, the invitation is presented, addressing the misconception that the Message is linked to sorcery. The discourse emphasises that there's nothing mysterious or magical about it; instead, it communicates two fundamental truths. Firstly, it asserts the existence of God, the Creator and Manager of the universe, as your Master and Lord, deserving your worship. The second truth highlights the afterlife, where you'll be held accountable for your actions in this world, receiving either rewards or punishments based on your adherence or disobedience to God's guidance. Regardless of your acknowledgment, these realities remain true. The Messenger ﷺ urges acceptance of these truths and aligns your life accordingly, promises a blessed outcome if accepted but the surah cautions about negative consequences if ignored.
