There's no confirmed date from reliable sources about when this Surah was revealed, but based on its content and style, it seems like one of the earliest Surahs to come from Makkah.
In this Surah, the teachings of Islam are introduced briefly and a wake-up call is given to those who are heedless. It's like a summary of Islam's message, meant to be easily understood. The early Surahs from Makkah aim to make people think and awaken their conscience. The first five verses emphasise the well-organised universe created by God and remind humans of their purpose: to be tested based on their deeds. Verses 6-11 warn of the consequences of disbelief in the Hereafter. They remind people that the Prophets warned them about these consequences, urging them to change their behaviour. Verses 12-14 emphasise that God is aware of everything, even the secrets of hearts. People are urged to avoid evil, knowing they'll be held accountable, which leads to forgiveness and reward. Verses 15-23 draw attention to common occurrences, like the stability of the earth and sustenance from God, to make people reflect. They're reminded that they have senses and intellect to understand, unlike animals. Verses 24-27 remind people that they'll face God eventually, urging them to prepare. They're warned not to demand premature signs, as the events will unfold as decreed by God. Verses 28-29 respond to the disbelievers' curses against the Prophet ﷺ and believers, challenging them to reflect on their fate. It's emphasised that belief in God is not misguided, and the truth will become clear. In conclusion, people are asked to consider who besides God could provide life-giving water if it were to vanish. It's a call to recognize God's power and reflect on one's dependence on Him.
