This Surah is undoubtedly from Madinah, and its content suggests it was likely revealed sometime between the Battle of Uhud and the Truce of Hudaybiyyah. This period was tough for the small Islamic community in Madinah, surrounded by disbelievers and facing the might of Arabia. Islam needed not only the sacrifice of lives but also financial support. The Surah makes a strong appeal for both. This is supported by verse 10, where God addresses the believers, emphasising the importance of those who spent and fought before victory compared to those who did so after. Traditions from Anas indicate that verse 16, urging believers to be submissive to God, was revealed about 17 years after the start of the Qur’an's revelation, encouraging believers to action. It's believed this Surah was revealed between the 4th and 5th year after the migration to Madinah.
This Surah urges Muslims to generously contribute to the cause of God, especially during critical times like the struggle against Arab paganism. It emphasises that Islam isn't just about words and rituals, but about sincere devotion to God and His religion. The Surah first highlights God's attributes to remind listeners of His authority. Then, it discusses several key points: 1- It stresses the importance of spending wealth for God's cause, as all wealth ultimately belongs to God. 2- Sacrifices made when Islam is weak hold greater value than those made during times of strength. 3- Spending for truth is a loan to God, repaid manifold in the Hereafter. 4- Only believers who spend for God will receive light in the Hereafter; hypocrites will be separated. 5- Muslims shouldn't become like those who worship worldly desires. 6- True witnesses of faith are those who spend sincerely, without seeking attention. 7- Worldly life is transient; striving for Paradise is paramount. 8- True believers remain steadfast in adversity and humble in prosperity. 9- God provides resources for establishing truth; humans must use them wisely. 10- Despite past prophets, many persisted in wickedness. The Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ followers, who fear God and believe in Him, will receive abundant mercy and guidance. God's blessings aren't exclusive to any group; He bestows them as He sees fit.
