The content and style indicate that this Surah was revealed early in Makkah.
This Surah focuses on two main topics: the afterlife and the role of prophets. In the first six verses, it describes the initial phase of the afterlife, where dramatic events like the sun losing its light, stars scattering, mountains moving, and people becoming oblivious to their belongings occur. Then, in the next seven verses, it delves into the second phase, where souls are reunited with bodies, records of deeds are revealed, and people face judgement, with Heaven and Hell made apparent. After this vivid depiction, individuals are encouraged to reflect on their own actions, as everyone will eventually come to understand their own deeds. Following this, the Surah addresses the people of Makkah, asserting that Muhammad's ﷺ message isn't the ranting of a madman or the deceptive whispers of Satan. Instead, it's the sincere proclamation of a noble, trustworthy messenger chosen by God, who Muhammad ﷺ has personally witnessed in the clear daylight. The Surah challenges the people to consider where they're headed by rejecting this message.
