The consensus among all commentators is that this surah is of Makkan origin. An examination of its subject matter and style further confirms that it belongs to the earliest revelations received in Makkah.
In Surah Al-Humazah, the condemnation of certain evils prevalent among the materialistic hoarders of wealth in pre-Islamic society is emphasised. These individuals, characterised by their greed and arrogance, are warned of their ultimate fate in the Hereafter. The Surah vividly portrays the consequences awaiting those who embody such traits, leading listeners to conclude that such individuals deserve the fate that awaits them. Moreover, when read in sequence with preceding Surahs like Az-Zalzalah, Al-Aadiyaat, Al-Qaari'ah, and At-Takaathur, the fundamental beliefs and teachings of Islam are underscored. These Surahs collectively emphasise the inevitability of the Hereafter, accountability for one's deeds, and the transient nature of worldly pursuits. Thus, Surah Al-Humazah serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of materialism and arrogance, reinforcing the importance of faith, righteous deeds, and patience.
