Whilst these verses might not necessarily reference the scientific findings mentioned here, they showcase how, even the most hard to imagine realities explained by the Quran, can be shown to be permissible with modern scientific discoveries. Wormholes, theoretical bridges in space-time that drastically shorten distances, are a concept born out of Einstein’s general relativity. Scientists describe them as shortcuts through space, connecting distant points in the universe. While modern physics explores these phenomena, believers in the Quran point to verses that they interpret as references to such advanced concepts.
- Mechanism: Wormholes act like tunnels between two regions in space-time, enabling travel across vast distances in much shorter times. They are theorized to create gravitational effects such as time dilation (time moving differently for travelers compared to outside observers) and length contraction (apparent shrinking of distances inside the wormhole). - Energy-Free Travel: Like a frictionless roller coaster, travelers entering a wormhole are propelled by gravity, needing no energy to move through.
from Allah, Lord of pathways of ˹heavenly˺ ascent,70:3
˹through which˺ the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirit will ascend to Him on a Day fifty thousand years in length.70:4
The term Ma'arej (معارج) is interpreted by some as wormholes, used by angels for rapid travel. The time dilation mentioned (one day for angels equals 50,000 years on Earth) aligns with modern concepts of relativistic travel through wormholes.
They would not believe in this ˹Quran˺ despite the ˹many˺ examples of those ˹destroyed˺ before.15:13
And even if We opened for them a gate to heaven, through which they continued to ascend,15:14
still they would say, “Our eyes have truly been dazzled! In fact, we must have been bewitched.”15:15
Indeed, We have placed constellations in the sky, and adorned it for all to see.15:16
And We protected it from every accursed devil,15:17
The verse describes skeptics refusing to believe even if shown interstellar travel through "doors" in the heavens, likened to wormholes. Their perception of the journey as an illusion might reference the surreal effects of traveling through space-time.
Surely those who receive our revelations with denial and arrogance, the gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle. This is how We reward the wicked.7:40
The phrase "eye of the needle" is suggested to reference extreme length contraction inside a wormhole.
The Islamic tradition of Isra and Mi'raj—the Prophet Muhammad’s night journey—is sometimes linked to wormholes. The journey is said to have spanned vast cosmic distances in a short time, aligning with the concept of a space-time shortcut.
While the scientific theory of wormholes remains untested, the parallels between Quranic descriptions of angelic travel and modern physics invite curiosity. These interpretations showcase an effort to align faith with scientific discovery, most importantly, they showcase the scientific possibility of claims in the Quran to evidence its Divine nature.
