1400 years ago, the concept of galaxies beyond what could be seen was unimaginable. The universe was thought to consist only of what people could observe with the naked eye, with no understanding of distant galaxies or large-scale structures in space. Today, we know that the universe contains billions of galaxies, which form vast superstructures such as galaxy filaments.
Galaxy filaments are the largest known structures in the universe, made up of massive, thread-like formations of galaxies. These filaments typically stretch for hundreds of millions of light-years, linking superclusters of galaxies and forming boundaries between vast voids in the universe. They are crucial components of the large-scale cosmic structure.
In Quran 2:22, it is stated:
˹He is the One˺ Who has made the earth a place of settlement for you and the sky a canopy; and sends down rain from the sky, causing fruits to grow as a provision for you. So do not knowingly set up equals to Allah ˹in worship˺.2:22
The word "Bina-e" (بِناءً), which translates to "structure," refers to the sky being a structure. Today, we understand that the "structure" mentioned in the verse could be interpreted as the large-scale filaments of galaxies forming the cosmic web, a structure that binds galaxies together in massive networks. These filaments are some of the largest and most complex formations in the universe, which were only confirmed by modern astronomy long after the Quran was revealed. This reference to a "structure" in the Quran, when read with the context of current scientific understanding, resonates with the concept of galaxy filaments and the vast interconnectedness of galaxies in space. Whilst these verses might not necessarily reference the scientific findings mentioned here, they showcase how, even the most hard to imagine realities explained by the Quran, can be shown to be permissible with modern scientific discoveries.
