1,400 years ago, the concept that stars and planets wobble as they orbit was unknown. However, the Quran describes this phenomenon. Whilst these verses might not necessarily reference the scientific findings mentioned here, they showcase how, even the most hard to imagine realities explained by the Quran, can be shown to be permissible with modern scientific discoveries.
Modern science reveals that stars and planets don’t orbit each other directly; instead, they revolve around a shared center of mass called the barycenter. This applies to our solar system and exoplanet systems beyond it. For example: - If a star has planets orbiting it, the star itself will also move in a small orbit around the barycenter, creating a “wobbling” effect.
- Seen from different perspectives, stars and planets orbit their barycenter in spirals. - From far away, a distant observer may notice a slight vertical component in the motion, making the star appear to move in a pattern similar to running.
The Quran, in Surah Ya-Sin (36:38), mentions:
The sun travels for its fixed term. That is the design of the Almighty, All-Knowing.36:38
The Arabic word Tajree (تَجْرِي), meaning "runs," describes the sun’s motion in a way that aligns with modern observations of how stars (as the sun is a star) and planets move around their barycenters. This understanding was only established by modern astronomy, but it was mentioned in the Quran centuries earlier. This demonstrates a deep alignment between the Quran’s verses and modern scientific discoveries, highlighting its miraculous nature. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, being unlettered, could not have had access to such advanced knowledge through human means, it must have been from The Divine, Creator of all things.
