1400 years ago, the concept of dark energy was unknown, but the Quran seems to describe a force that aligns remarkably with what modern science now refers to as dark energy. Dark energy is a mysterious force that opposes gravity and causes the universe to expand at an accelerating rate. Scientists today don't fully understand what dark energy is, but they know that without it, the universe would have collapsed long ago.
It is Allah Who has raised the heavens without pillars—as you can see—then established Himself on the Throne. He has subjected the sun and the moon, each orbiting for an appointed term. He conducts the whole affair. He makes the signs clear so that you may be certain of the meeting with your Lord.13:2
The phrase "without pillars that you can see" can be interpreted as a reference to an invisible force that counteracts gravity, which is similar to how dark energy functions. Just as pillars oppose the force of gravity, dark energy works invisibly to prevent the universe from collapsing.
Indeed, Allah ˹alone˺ keeps the heavens and the earth from falling apart. If they were to fall apart, none but Him could hold them up. He is truly Most Forbearing, All-Forgiving.35:41
This verse can be seen as describing the role of dark energy in preventing the universe from disappearing. Without dark energy, the universe would have collapsed a long time ago, confirming that it is this invisible force that sustains the universe's expansion and prevents it from vanishing.
Today's cosmologists confirm that dark energy is responsible for the universe's accelerating expansion. Without it, the universe would have eventually contracted and collapsed under the influence of gravity. The Quran's descriptions align with these modern scientific concepts, suggesting that the forces described in the Quran serve to maintain the balance of the universe, much like dark energy does today. These references to unseen forces preserving the universe were described long before the discovery of dark energy, adding a fascinating layer of coherence between the Quranic verses and contemporary scientific understanding. Whilst these verses might not necessarily reference the scientific findings mentioned here, they showcase how, even the most hard to imagine realities explained by the Quran, can be shown to be permissible with modern scientific discoveries.
