The Quran mentions the "locations of stars" in a profound way that aligns with modern scientific discoveries. For centuries, people assumed that the stars we see in the night sky are in their current locations. However, science has now revealed that when we observe stars, we are actually looking into the past due to the time it takes for their light to reach Earth. This concept is beautifully hinted at in the Quran, over 1400 years ago.
1. Looking Back in Time: Light from distant stars takes years, decades, or even millennia to reach us, depending on their distance. When we look at stars, we see them as they were when the light left their surfaces, not as they are now. Over this time, stars move to new locations due to their own motions within the galaxy. 2. Modern Understanding: Astronomers now know that stars are not stationary. Their apparent positions in the night sky are not where they are currently, but where they were in the past when the light we see began its journey toward Earth.
So I do swear by the positions of the stars—56:75
and this, if only you knew, is indeed a great oath—56:76
that this is truly a noble Quran,56:77
The Quran does not swear by the stars themselves but by their locations. This distinction is significant because today, we know that the locations we see are where the stars used to be, not where they are now. This scientific fact, only recently understood, was alluded to in the Quran centuries ago.
This remarkable alignment between the Quranic description and modern astrophysics highlights the Quran’s advanced insights into celestial phenomena. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was unlettered, could not have known these details without divine revelation. This adds to the Quran's credibility as a text that continues to resonate with scientific truths discovered long after its revelation. Whilst these verses might not necessarily reference the scientific findings mentioned here, they showcase how, even the most hard to imagine realities explained by the Quran, can be shown to be permissible with modern scientific discoveries.
