The concept of the universe's end has intrigued scientists for centuries. Previously, scientists believed that the universe could end in one of three possible scenarios: the Big Rip, the Big Chill, or the Big Crunch. While the first two scenarios—the universe tearing apart or cooling to an uninhabitable state—have been ruled out, recent research points to the Big Crunch, where gravity will cause the universe to collapse back into a dense, hot state. Remarkably, the Quran described aspects of this phenomenon 1400 years ago, aligning with modern scientific understandings.
Recent findings, such as the data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), suggest that dark energy, once believed to be causing an ever-accelerating expansion, may be weakening over time. As dark energy fades, gravity will once again dominate, leading to the eventual collapse of the universe into a "Big Crunch." This process mirrors the conditions present at the moment of the Big Bang—only in reverse. Scientists now believe that the accelerated expansion of the universe will eventually slow and reverse, with galaxies and cosmic matter being drawn together under the influence of gravity.
Interestingly, the Quran alludes to this end-of-the-universe scenario, with gravity playing a pivotal role. In Quran 7:187, Allah speaks of the coming of the Hour, the Day of Judgment, and says:
They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ regarding the Hour, “When will it be?” Say, “That knowledge is only with my Lord. He alone will reveal it when the time comes. It is too tremendous for the heavens and the earth and will only take you by surprise.” They ask you as if you had full knowledge of it. Say, “That knowledge is only with Allah, but most people do not know.”7:187
The use of the word "thaqilat" (ثقُلَتْ) meaning "heavy" or "weighs," could reference the concept of gravity. In modern physics, gravity is understood as the curvature of spacetime itself, as described by General Relativity. The Quran's mention of the heaviness of the heavens and the earth foreshadows the role gravity plays in the collapse of the universe in the Big Crunch.
Further reinforcing the idea of the universe’s eventual collapse, Quran 21:104 states:
On that Day We will roll up the heavens like a scroll of writings. Just as We produced the first creation, ˹so˺ shall We reproduce it. That is a promise binding on Us. We truly uphold ˹Our promises˺!21:104
The image of folding the heavens "like a book" is strikingly similar to modern concepts of spacetime curvature. According to General Relativity, spacetime can bend or fold under the influence of mass and gravity, a phenomenon seen in black holes and wormholes. In this verse, God promises to fold the heavens at the end of time, potentially referring to the collapse of the universe during the Big Crunch.
The alignment between these Quranic descriptions and modern scientific concepts is nothing short of miraculous. The Quran presents a vision of the universe where gravity plays a decisive role in both its creation and eventual collapse. By describing the universe's end in terms of "weight" (gravity) and the "folding" of the heavens (spacetime curvature), the Quranic verses echo principles that were discovered by scientists over a millennium later. How could an unlettered man from the 7th century have known such details about the universe, its expansion, and eventual collapse? Unlike the Bible, which describes a static universe, the Quran provides a dynamic vision of creation and destruction—further reinforcing its divine origin.
The scientific community once struggled with the concept of a static universe, as depicted in traditional texts, including the Bible. Albert Einstein famously referred to his introduction of the cosmological constant to maintain a static universe as his greatest "blunder." However, the Quran’s foresight of a dynamic, expanding, and ultimately collapsing universe demonstrates a profound and miraculous alignment with the natural world. It is a testament to the Quran's divine knowledge that was revealed long before humanity could comprehend these scientific principles. Whilst these verses might not necessarily reference the scientific findings mentioned here, they showcase how, even the most hard to imagine realities explained by the Quran, can be shown to be permissible with modern scientific discoveries.
