The Quran describes the expanding universe, a concept that was unknown 1400 years ago, based on the verse from Quran 51:47:
We built the universe with ˹great˺ might, and We are certainly expanding ˹it˺.51:47
This verse is interpreted to describe the ongoing expansion of the universe, which aligns with modern cosmological discoveries, particularly the theory of the expanding universe.
Scientific Background: - The expansion of the universe refers to the observation that galaxies are moving away from each other, a phenomenon first confirmed by Edwin Hubble in the 1920s. This discovery led to the development of the Big Bang Theory, which posits that the universe began from a singular, highly dense state and has been expanding ever since. - More recently, dark energy, a mysterious force that counteracts gravity, was identified as the primary driver of the accelerating expansion of the universe. Scientists still don’t fully understand dark energy, but its effects on the universe's expansion are well-documented.
The Quranic verse is often cited to support the idea that the concept of an expanding universe was alluded to long before modern science. The phrase "We are still expanding" suggests an ongoing process, implying that the universe is not static but is continually changing and growing.
- The Bible: In contrast, the Bible presents a more static view of the universe. In Job 37:18, it describes the heavens as "hard as a mirror of cast bronze," indicating a fixed, immovable sky, unlike the dynamic universe described in the Quran. - Einstein's Cosmological Constant: For a long time, Albert Einstein adhered to a static universe model, which he later abandoned after Hubble's discovery. Einstein had introduced the cosmological constant to explain a universe that wasn’t expanding or contracting, but later referred to it as his "biggest blunder" when the expansion of the universe was confirmed.
The argument here is about the source of such knowledge. The claim is that an unlettered man from the 7th century (referring to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) could not have known that the universe was expanding in the way we understand it today. The Quran's reference to the expanding universe is therefore seen as an indication of divine knowledge, as it predates modern scientific discoveries by over a millennium.
The verse can be interpreted as a profound statement on the dynamic nature of the cosmos, which aligns with modern cosmology, but it's important to also consider the context of the era in which the Quran was revealed. The idea that the universe is expanding was not a widely known concept 1400 years ago, and the Quran's mention of expansion thus stands out in its congruence with modern scientific understanding.
