The Quran mentions Earth having a protective shield, which skeptics might dismiss, arguing that Earth is surrounded by vacuum, and nothing protects us. However, modern science has confirmed that Earth is protected by an invisible magnetic field known as the magnetosphere, which shields us from harmful cosmic and solar radiation. The Earth's magnetosphere is generated by the motion of molten iron within its outer core, creating a magnetic field. This magnetic field protects life on Earth by deflecting dangerous charged particles from the Sun and cosmic rays, which would otherwise strip away the atmosphere and make the planet inhospitable. This protective shield is crucial for maintaining the conditions necessary for life on Earth.
Quran 21:32 says:
And We have made the sky a well-protected canopy, still they turn away from its signs.21:32
The term "protected shield" (سَقْفًا مَحْفُوظًا) in the verse refers not only to Earth's visible atmosphere, which protects from meteorites, but also implicitly to the invisible magnetic field that shields the planet from cosmic radiation. The verse indicates a dual form of protection, which is a fitting description of how Earth's atmosphere and magnetosphere work together to make Earth habitable. The importance of Earth's magnetic field is also evident in the case of Mars, which once had an atmosphere but lost it over time because it lacked a strong magnetic field. Without this magnetic shield, Mars became exposed to solar winds and cosmic radiation, contributing to its uninhabitable state. Thus, the Quran's mention of a "protected shield" aligns remarkably with modern scientific understanding of Earth's protection from the dangers of space. This verse, revealed 1400 years ago, accurately reflects the importance of the Earth's magnetosphere, a phenomenon only recently understood by scientists. Whilst these verses might not necessarily reference the scientific findings mentioned here, they clearly showcase how the guidance mentioned in the Quran are very much scientifically possible.
