Over 1400 years ago, it was common for people to mistake the planet Venus for a star, as it is one of the brightest objects in the night sky. The Bible also refers to the “Star of Venus,” associating it with the deity Ishtar. However, modern astronomy has established that Venus is not a star but a planet within our solar system. Interestingly, the Quran accurately referred to Venus as a planet, centuries before this was scientifically understood.
- The Star of Ishtar: Venus was worshipped as the “Star of Ishtar” by ancient Sumerians and other civilizations, who revered it as a divine celestial body. Historical records confirm that many ancient cultures, including those at Abraham's birthplace, misidentified Venus as a star. - Modern Astronomy: Today, astronomers confirm that Venus is a rocky planet within our solar system, orbiting the Sun. This distinction between a star and a planet is fundamental in modern science.
And ˹remember˺ when Abraham said to his father, Ȃzar, “Do you take idols as gods? It is clear to me that you and your people are entirely misguided.”6:74
We also showed Abraham the wonders of the heavens and the earth, so he would be sure in faith.6:75
When the night grew dark upon him, he saw a star and said, “This is my Lord!” But when it set, he said, “I do not love things that set.”6:76
Then when he saw the moon rising, he said, “This one is my Lord!” But when it disappeared, he said, “If my Lord does not guide me, I will certainly be one of the misguided people.”6:77
Then when he saw the sun shining, he said, “This must be my Lord—it is the greatest!” But again when it set, he declared, “O my people! I totally reject whatever you associate ˹with Allah in worship˺.6:78
I have turned my face towards the One Who has originated the heavens and the earth—being upright—and I am not one of the polytheists.”6:79
In these verses, the Quran uses the word Kaukab (كَوْكَبً), which means "planet," to describe Venus. This contrasts sharply with the mistaken belief of the time that Venus was a star. Bear in mind that whilst it is translated as 'planet', it can also mean star which you may see in some translations of the Quran. However, the word star najm (نجم) can only be used to mean star and is not used in the Quran.
The Quran’s precise description of Venus as a planet aligns with modern astronomical discoveries. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was unlettered, could not have had access to such scientific knowledge at that time. This accurate depiction, centuries ahead of its time, is considered by many to be evidence of the Quran's divine origin.
