1400 years ago, the concept of time dilation, a phenomenon now understood through Einstein's theory of relativity, was completely unknown. However, astonishingly, the Quran alludes to this scientific principle, long before it was discovered by modern scientists.
Time dilation refers to the difference in the passage of time depending on the strength of gravity or the velocity of an object. According to Einstein’s theory of relativity, time runs slower in stronger gravitational fields or when moving at speeds close to the speed of light. Thus, the passage of time is relative, not absolute, and can vary for different observers depending on their frame of reference. For instance, time moves slower for someone on the surface of a massive star (like a neutron star) compared to someone far away from such a gravitational field. The stronger the gravity or the higher the velocity, the more time dilates.
The Quran appears to describe time dilation in multiple verses, long before the concept was known to science.
˹through which˺ the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirit will ascend to Him on a Day fifty thousand years in length.70:4
This verse describes how time for angels differs drastically from time on Earth. In the Quran, it is stated that the angels experience 1 day, which human observers would measure as 50,000 years. This discrepancy in time is a clear reference to the concept of time dilation, suggesting that angels traverse a realm where time behaves differently than on Earth. This phenomenon can be explained by the existence of a wormhole or a similar gravitational field that alters the passage of time.
They challenge you ˹O Prophet˺ to hasten the torment. And Allah will never fail in His promise. But a day with your Lord is indeed like a thousand years by your counting.22:47
In this verse, the Quran compares time on Earth to time in Paradise or Hell, where one day equals a thousand years. This again indicates the relative nature of time, which aligns with our understanding of time dilation in different gravitational environments.
In modern physics, wormholes are hypothetical passages through space-time that could connect distant regions of the universe. These wormholes are theorized to allow time dilation to occur—if one enters a wormhole, the passage of time may be drastically different inside compared to the outside universe. Whilst these verses might not necessarily reference the scientific findings mentioned here, they showcase how, even the most hard to imagine realities explained by the Quran, can be shown to be permissible with modern scientific discoveries.
