Modern science has identified microbursts, intense vertical downdrafts caused by thunderstorms or rain showers, as a severe threat to aviation. These downdrafts hit the ground with force and then spread outward, causing dangerous wind shear. Microbursts can uproot trees and have been responsible for multiple aircraft accidents.
- Microbursts: These short-lived, powerful vertical winds descend rapidly to the ground before spreading horizontally. Their effects last only seconds to minutes but can cause severe turbulence and catastrophic consequences for aircraft during landing or takeoff. - Impact on Aviation: Pilots must be trained to recognize and manage microburst events, which were identified as a major cause of historical crashes.
The Quran describes a downward wind in Quran 22:31:
Be upright ˹in devotion˺ to Allah, associating none with Him ˹in worship˺. For whoever associates ˹others˺ with Allah is like someone who has fallen from the sky and is either snatched away by birds or swept by the wind to a remote place.22:31
The phrase “taken down by the wind to a deep place” aligns with the modern understanding of vertical winds (like microbursts) striking downward and impacting low-lying areas. While ancient descriptions of wind typically referred to lateral motion, this verse intriguingly captures the vertical nature of winds that was only recently understood.
This verse anticipates a natural phenomenon unknown at the time of its revelation. The danger posed by such vertical winds, especially to humans in flight (aviation), was only scientifically recognized in recent decades.
