The mass extinction of the dinosaurs, particularly the catastrophic event at the end of the Cretaceous period, is believed to have been caused by a massive asteroid or comet impact at Chicxulub, Mexico. The collision released vast amounts of dust and aerosols into the atmosphere, blocking sunlight, cooling the Earth, and disrupting ecosystems. This event triggered a cascade of environmental changes, including the formation of acid rain, which had a devastating impact on life.
- Impact and Dust Clouds: When the asteroid struck, the resulting explosion vaporized large amounts of rock, including sulfur-rich materials. These materials formed sulfate aerosols that spread throughout the atmosphere, leading to acid rain. The sulfur compounds released from the impact reacted with water vapor in the atmosphere, producing highly acidic rainfall. This acid rain damaged ecosystems, dissolving plant foliage and affecting marine life, particularly those relying on calcium-based shells. - Temperature and Photosynthesis: The dust and smoke blocked sunlight for weeks or months, cooling the planet dramatically in what is called an impact winter. This abrupt cooling, combined with the acid rain, hindered plant photosynthesis and caused mass disruptions in food chains. This combination of acid rain, darkness, and cooling is believed to have been one of the main drivers of the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs.
Interestingly, the Quran makes references to smoke and catastrophic events that align closely with what we understand today about the K-T extinction event.
The Quran describes objects falling from the sky, referred to as "mountains" with ice inside them, which could be interpreted as meteorites or comets. These objects would create a flash upon entry into the atmosphere, similar to the massive impact event that occurred at Chicxulub.
Do you not see that Allah gently drives the clouds, then joins them together, piling them up into masses, from which you see raindrops come forth? And He sends down from the sky mountains ˹of clouds˺ loaded with hail, pouring it on whoever He wills and averting it from whoever He wills. The flash of the clouds’ lightning nearly takes away eyesight.24:43
This could be a description of the meteorites or asteroids that caused the mass extinction, with their bright flash resembling the impact's explosive nature.
In another verse, the Quran mentions a "prevailing smoke" that envelops mankind. This is often interpreted as referring to a period of intense atmospheric smoke, similar to the effects of the asteroid impact which blocked sunlight and created a global cooling event.
Wait then ˹O Prophet˺ for the day ˹when˺ the sky will be veiled in haze, clearly visible,44:10
overwhelming the people. ˹They will cry,˺ “This is a painful torment.44:11
The "smoke" mentioned here aligns with the dust and aerosols from the impact that blocked sunlight and caused global cooling, leading to acid rain and widespread destruction.
While the Quranic verses were written over 1,400 years ago, they describe events that resemble modern scientific explanations of the K-T extinction, where a comet or asteroid impact triggered massive environmental changes, including acid rain, temperature shifts, and catastrophic effects on life. Today, science confirms that acid rain and the blocking of sunlight were crucial factors in the extinction event. The Quran's references to "smoke" and "mountains with ice" can be seen as remarkable descriptions that align with modern scientific understanding of cosmic impacts and their aftermath. Whilst these verses might not necessarily reference the scientific findings mentioned here, they showcase how, even the most hard to imagine realities explained by the Quran, can be shown to be permissible with modern scientific discoveries.
