Modern meteorology confirms that Category 5 storms, the strongest on the Saffir-Simpson scale, can snap or uproot virtually all trees. Winds exceeding 157 mph cause catastrophic damage, destroying structures and debarking trees. This understanding of wind's destructive potential was scientifically established in recent history.
Category 5 Storms: Defined by winds over 157 mph, they cause severe damage, including snapping and uprooting trees. This was unimaginable in earlier times when wind was mainly seen as a force pushing lighter objects like people The Quran describes a furious wind destroying the Aad people:
And as for ’Ȃd, they were destroyed by a furious, bitter wind69:6
which Allah unleashed on them non-stop for seven nights and eight days, so that you would have seen its people lying dead like trunks of uprooted palm trees.69:7
The imagery of “empty stumps of palm trees” aligns with modern observations of trees being snapped by extreme wind forces, a phenomenon confirmed in Category 5 storms.
This verse remarkably reflects an understanding of wind's ability to cause catastrophic damage, including snapping trees, long before modern science confirmed this through the study of hurricanes and typhoons. Whilst these verses might not necessarily reference the scientific findings mentioned here, they showcase how, even the most hard to imagine realities explained by the Quran, can be shown to be permissible with modern scientific discoveries.
