The idea of humans reaching the sky is indeed a remarkable concept for its time, and the Quran presents verses that seem to allude to the possibility of such advancements.
And you cannot escape Him on earth or in heaven. Nor have you any protector or helper besides Allah.”29:22
This verse acknowledges the notion that humans could ascend to the sky, symbolizing the eventual ability of mankind to travel beyond the confines of Earth. "You will ride layer upon layer." [also translated as 'You will certainly pass from one state to another.' but literal translation 'You will ride/embark a stage/layer/cover from/of/on a stage/layer/cover' (they move from one state to another)] (84:19) The Arabic term "Tabak طبق" translates to "layer," which can be interpreted to mean ascending through different strata, such as atmospheric or even celestial layers. This foreshadows advancements like flying and aviation.
When these verses were revealed over 1,400 years ago, human flight was inconceivable. The concept of soaring into the skies was relegated to myths, such as flying carpets in folklore. The Quran's reference to "riding layers" anticipates the layered structure of the atmosphere, a reality unveiled centuries later through scientific discoveries.
Today, this prophecy aligns with the development of aviation and space travel. Humans not only ride through atmospheric layers using aircraft but also traverse into outer layers of the Earth's atmosphere and beyond through rockets and spacecraft.
The Quran's use of poetic yet precise language transcends its time, describing feats that were far beyond the imagination of people in the 7th century. The layered nature of Earth's atmosphere—troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, etc.—further complements this interpretation, making it a profound and awe-inspiring reflection of human achievement.
The foresight in these verses invites reflection on the timeless wisdom in the Quran. How could an unlettered man living 1,400 years ago foresee advancements like flight and space exploration? For believers, it emphasises the divine origin of the Quran, while for others, it showcases its enduring relevance and depth.
