We have already spoken about two of the signs Moses showed his people - (1) the staff turning into a serpent and (2) his hand shining white. (3) The storm, (4) The locust, (5)The louse,(6)The Frog,(7)The Blood, (8) The Year of drought, (9) The scarcity of crops.. In addition, there were other trials Allah gave them in order to show them the reality of this world and who really has power - if Pharaoh was all-powerful then no bad would befall him. Furthermore, these trials were sent as a mercy and chance to change their ways. After all, it is easier to get closer to Allah when you are in need. However, when there were good times, they attributed it to themselves, saying that is what they deserve. When something bad happened, they would blame it as a bad omen from Moses and say their associate gods were angry with him.
In times of prosperity, they said, “This is what we deserve,” but in adversity, they blamed it on Moses and those with him. Surely all is destined by Allah. Yet most of them did not know.7:131
They said, “No matter what sign you may bring to deceive us, we will never believe in you.”7:132
(4) Another sign was years of drought and a shortage of crops.
Indeed, We afflicted Pharaoh’s people with famine and shortage of crops so they might come back ˹to their senses˺.7:130
In every trial, the people would ask Moses to pray that it ended and Moses did. But after the trial would pass, they would not believe in the truth and go back to their ignorant ways.
When tormented, they pleaded, “O Moses! Pray to your Lord on our behalf, by virtue of the covenant He made with you. If you help remove this torment from us, we will certainly believe in you and let the Children of Israel go with you.”7:134
But as soon as We removed the torment from them—until they met their inevitable fate—they broke their promise.7:135
Furthermore, they were sent a (5) Flood: Ibn Abbas outlined this as an abundance of rain that killed their crops (6) Locusts which decimated every one of their crops (7) Lice (8) Frogs that took over every area, when someone opened their mouth to eat, drink or talk a frog jumped into it (9) Blood was mixed with all of their water sources. Whether they got it from the Nile, a well, there was blood in it.
So We plagued them with floods, locusts, lice, frogs, and blood—all as clear signs, but they persisted in arrogance and were a wicked people.7:133
These trials were only felt by the Egyptians, not the Israelities - another clear proof of his truth and a clear sign it was not their gods who were angry with Moses, but Allah warning the Egyptians. Every time, they pleaded and promised Moses that they would believe in the truth once the trial was gone, and each time they broke their promises - despite being given many chances.
Indeed, We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: “I am a messenger of the Lord of all worlds.”43:46
But as soon as he came to them with Our signs, they laughed at them,43:47
although every sign We showed them was greater than the one before. Ultimately, We seized them with torments so that they might return ˹to the Right Path˺.43:48
˹Then˺ they pleaded, “O ˹mighty˺ magician! Pray to your Lord on our behalf, by virtue of the covenant He made with you. We will certainly accept guidance.”43:49
But as soon as We removed the torments from them, they broke their promise.43:50
Pharaoh, despite all of these signs, repeatedly showed his arrogant dismissal of truth. He continued to try to missguide his people to the best of his ability.
And Pharaoh called out to his people, boasting, “O my people! Am I not sovereign over Egypt as well as ˹all˺ these streams flowing at my feet? Can you not see?43:51
Am I not better than this nobody who can hardly express himself?43:52
Why then have no golden bracelets ˹of kingship˺ been granted to him or angels come with him as escorts!”43:53
And so he fooled his people, and they obeyed him. They were truly a rebellious people.43:54
