This timeline will also include Haurn (Aaron), brother of Moses and prophet - as well as Khidr, who is often regarded as a prophet, although there is difference of opinions.
Moses was the son of Imran, son of Qahath, son of Azar, son of Levy, son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham.
The people of Moses had many evil practices. The Pharaoh (ruler) of the time divided his people; the Israelities were separated from the coptic (A type of Ancient) Egyptians. The Israelities were unfairly treated; they were only allowed the lower jobs and humiliated. In addition, the Pharaoh would kill their males due to a prophecy that came from the time of Ibrahim which said that a child from the Israelites would destroy the Pharaoh's kingdom. This came after the king of Egypt at the time of Ibrahim, attempted to misbehave with Sarah, Ibrahim's wife - remind yourself of this story here.
After this, Allah told Sarah that from her progeny a boy will come who will destroy the kingdom of the Egyptian king. This prophecy was well-known amongst the Israelities and was passed down and around until it reached the Pharaoh at the time of Moses through his ministers. Out of fear, Pharaoh commanded that all the male Israelities be killed.
Alternatively, Suddi narrated Pharaoh had a dream that a fire burnt all the Coptic Egyptian people and their homes but spared the Israelites. He gathered priests and sorcerers and they interpreted the dream stating that there will be a boy born from the Israelites who will destroy the people of Egypt. So, out of fear, the Pharaoh ordered all new born boys to be killed.
But it was Our Will to favour those who were oppressed in the land, making them models ˹of faith˺ as well as successors;28:5
The Pharaoh appointed people to monitor pregnant women and know their likely times of delivery. So that there was no chance a boy would be born without being killed.
Then, when he came to them with the truth from Us, they said, “Kill the sons of those who believe with him and keep their women.” But the plotting of the disbelievers was only in vain.40:25
The Egyptians realised that by killing all the Israelite males, they did not have enough of them to do the lower jobs they would normally fulfil. So, Pharaoh decided to instead only kill boys that were born every other year. It is said that Aaron, the brother of Moses who was also a prophet, was born in one of the years where boys were not to be killed.
Moses was born in a year where boys were being killed. So, his mother was very worried when she became pregnant, despite signs of her pregnancy being concealed. After giving birth, Allah guided her to put Moses into a basket, tied to her house with a long rope. Whenever she had any fear, she would place him in the basket and hide him behind the reeds of the Nile.
We inspired the mother of Moses: “Nurse him, but when you fear for him, put him then into the river, and do not fear or grieve. We will certainly return him to you, and make him one of the messengers.”28:7
Suhaili said that Moses' mother was inspired by Allah to put baby Musa in the basket and put it in river Nile. The basket floated on the Nile until it reached the Pharaoh's palace and the family of the Pharaoh picked him up.
