The phrase "Allah will protect you from people" means: deliver My Message to humanity, and I will protect, guard, and support you against your enemies, granting you victory over them. Do not be afraid or troubled; no one will be able to harm you, and you will not be killed by anyone—you will pass away peacefully in bed. Before this verse was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ was protected by guards. A story from Imam Ahmad, reported by A’isha (may Allah be pleased with her), tells that one night the Prophet ﷺ couldn't sleep while she was with him. He said, "I wish a righteous companion would guard me tonight." Just then, they heard the sound of armor, and the Prophet ﷺ asked, "Who is it?" The reply was, "I am Sa'd Ibn Malik!" The Prophet ﷺ asked why he had come, and Sa'd replied, "I've come to guard you, Messenger of Allah." A’isha then mentioned that after this, the Prophet ﷺ slept so soundly that she could hear him snoring. (This narration is also reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim). According to another version by At-Tirmidhi, A’isha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Prophet ﷺ had guards until the verse "Allah will protect you from people" was revealed. Then he told his guards, "O people, go, for Allah has protected me." This was a sign of Allah’s protection of His Messenger ﷺ against the harmful plans of the people of Makkah and its leaders, who were strongly opposed to him and fought against him constantly. Allah protected him through various means. At the start of his mission, his uncle Abu Talib protected him. Abu Talib was a respected leader of the Quraish, and Allah created in his heart a natural love for Muhammad ﷺ, though he himself was not a Muslim. This connection allowed Abu Talib to shield him from harm. It was only after Abu Talib’s death that the disbelievers started harming the Prophet ﷺ more directly. Later, Allah provided more support by guiding the Ansar (the people of Madinah) to Islam and welcoming the Prophet ﷺ into their city. When he moved to Madinah, they defended him from harm. Any attempt from the polytheists or People of the Book to harm him would be foiled, as Allah would protect him. For instance, the Jews attempted to harm him with magic, and Allah revealed Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Nas to protect him. When a group of Jews presented him with a poisoned piece of meat in Khaibar, Allah informed him and protected him. These are just a few examples of Allah’s constant protection of His Prophet ﷺ despite multiple assassination attempts and constant threat, Allah knows best.
