The Quran describes the power of Allah to freeze people in their final state, motionless and unable to move forward or back. In Surah Ya-Sin:
And had We willed, We could have transfigured them on the spot, so they could neither progress forward nor turn back.36:67
This verse highlights God’s ability to suspend people in a fixed state, portraying a concept skeptics dismissed as impossible for centuries. How could someone remain frozen in their last action without decaying or moving? However, modern archaeological discoveries have shown this to be a real phenomenon. In 79 A.D., the ancient Roman city of Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The fast-moving pyroclastic flow—a mix of hot ash, pumice, and gases—quickly overwhelmed the city, encasing its inhabitants in hardened volcanic debris. This natural disaster preserved people in their final acts, capturing their last movements and expressions in chilling detail. Archaeologists uncovered molds of bodies locked in their exact positions during the eruption, frozen in time by the volcanic materials. Interestingly, the Quran also describes Hell with imagery that aligns with volcanic activity, including molten substances and scorching heat. The preservation of Pompeii’s people serves as a striking reminder of the verse, where God has the ability to halt and fix individuals in place, unable to move forward or back. How could an illiterate man, living 1400 years ago, have known about this natural phenomenon, which aligns so perfectly with a divine act described in the Quran? This is yet another instance where the Quran demonstrates knowledge that transcends its time, pointing to its divine origin.
