˹Remember, O believers,˺ when Allah promised ˹to give˺ you the upper hand over either target, you wished to capture the unarmed party. But it was Allah’s Will to establish the truth by His Words and uproot the disbelievers;8:7
This verse was revealed before the Battle of Badr. Allah had promised the Muslims that they would either capture the caravan they were pursuing or achieve victory in the Battle of Badr. It was revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that the caravan would escape safely, and that the Muslims would be granted victory in the Battle of Badr. As revealed in this verse, the Muslims went on to win their first decisive battle against all odds - it was a miraculous victory which had far-reaching impacts, sending a clear message to those who opposed the message of God and laying the foundations for future victories including the establishment of the first Muslim community.
