The concept of moving mountains was known to geologists only recently. However, the Quran mentioned the movement of mountains 1400 years ago, a discovery that aligns perfectly with modern scientific understanding of plate tectonics.
Now you see the mountains, thinking they are firmly fixed, but they are travelling ˹just˺ like clouds. ˹That is˺ the design of Allah, Who has perfected everything. Surely He is All-Aware of what you do.27:88
Key points: - The verse compares the movement of mountains to clouds, indicating slow and imperceptible motion. - The Quran does not suggest that mountains are fixed, but instead emphasizes their gradual movement.
- What Is Plate Tectonics? Plate tectonics describes the movement of Earth's lithosphere (the crust and upper mantle), which is divided into large plates. These plates are in constant motion, though very slowly—about 0 to 100 mm annually. - Movement of Continents and Mountains: Continental Drift: The movement of tectonic plates causes continents to drift. Mountains, as part of these plates, also move over time. Geological Evidence: Plate boundaries are responsible for geological phenomena such as mountain-building, earthquakes, and volcanic activity. Over millions of years, mountain ranges shift slowly as part of these processes.
In contrast, the Bible mentions that the Earth is fixed, suggesting a static, unchanging world. A passage from the Christian Bible in 1 Samuel 2:8 states: "He raises up the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; upon them he has set the world." (1 Samuel 2:8, NIV) This suggests that Earth is solid and immovable, held in place by pillars. This view contrasts sharply with the Quran's description of the Earth's dynamic nature, where even the mountains—traditionally considered immovable—are shown as slowly shifting over time.
Fourteen centuries ago, the idea that mountains could move was not even considered. People believed mountains were fixed in place. Today, through the study of tectonic plates, we understand that mountains are indeed moving, though at a pace imperceptible to the naked eye.
The Quran's reference to the movement of mountains mirrors the scientific discoveries of plate tectonics, raising questions about the source of such knowledge in a time when the Earth’s dynamic geology was unknown. In contrast, the Bible’s claim that the Earth is fixed illustrates the difference between these two perspectives on the Earth's nature.
