1400 years ago, nobody knew that pumice was the least dense stone on Earth. However, the Quran describes birds carrying rocks of pumice to strike their enemies. Skeptics doubted this claim, pointing out that pumice stones would be too heavy for birds to carry. But today, geologists confirm that pumice is so lightweight it can actually float on water.
Pumice Formation: Pumice forms when super-heated, highly pressurized rock is violently ejected from a volcano, creating a porous structure with a density of about 0.25 g/cm³. This means pumice stones are lightweight enough to float on water. How Pumice Can Be Carried: Geologists have confirmed that pumice's low density makes it easy for birds to carry it, a feature that wasn't known 1400 years ago.
The Quran mentions rocks of pumice in Surah Al-Fil (105:3-4):
For He sent against them flocks of birds,105:3
that pelted them with stones of baked clay,105:4
This reference to "rocks of pumice" perfectly matches modern knowledge about the rock's unique properties. The Quran's accurate depiction of pumice, centuries before it was discovered by science, shows remarkable foresight. How could an illiterate man 1400 years ago have known about pumice?
