Modern science reveals that soil expands when water is absorbed, a phenomenon causing damage such as potholes. Remarkably, the Quran references this process centuries before it was scientifically understood.
And among His signs is that you see the earth devoid of life, but as soon as We send down rain upon it, it begins to stir ˹to life˺ and swell. Indeed, the One Who revives it can easily revive the dead. He is certainly Most Capable of everything.41:39
Key points: - The term “Rabat” (رَبَتْ) means “rose higher,” describing the soil expanding upward after absorbing water. - The reference to shaking and rising aligns with the physical effects of water-induced soil expansion.
- What Is Soil Expansion? Expansive soils, rich in minerals like smectite clays, absorb water and increase in volume, sometimes by over 10%. This swelling can damage structures and create potholes when the soil expands and contracts with changing moisture levels. - Scientific Evidence: Potholes form as soil beneath asphalt absorbs water, expands, and pushes the road upward. When the soil dries, it contracts, leaving a gap that causes the asphalt to collapse. Such expansion and contraction cycles demonstrate the soil’s dynamic response to water.
Fourteen centuries ago, the concept of soil dynamics and water absorption was unknown. The Quran’s description of soil shaking and rising due to water presages modern findings about expansive soils.
The Quran’s depiction of water causing soil to rise corresponds with the scientific phenomenon of soil expansion. This remarkable alignment highlights advanced knowledge in a time when such concepts were beyond human comprehension.
