The Quran contains descriptions of the Earth that align with modern scientific understanding, particularly its spherical shape, rotation, and dynamic surface. Although 1400 years ago people believed Earth was flat, the Quran provides insights that reflect a more advanced knowledge of Earth's nature
Earth as a Sphere: The Quran mentions the alternation of night and day with the term Yukawir (from Kura, meaning "ball" or "sphere"). The verse describes the process of one period of time overlapping another, a concept that fits with the Earth being spherical.
He created the heavens and the earth for a purpose. He wraps the night around the day, and wraps the day around the night. And He has subjected the sun and the moon, each orbiting for an appointed term. He is truly the Almighty, Most Forgiving.39:5
- "He overlaps the night over the day and overlaps the day over the night, and enslaved the sun and the moon. ALL MOVE to a prerecorded destiny." - The gradual transition of day and night as observed from space confirms Earth's spherical shape.
Earth's Movement: The Quran uses the phrase Kullon Yajree ("all move") to refer to the movement of the Sun, Moon, and implicitly Earth. In Arabic, the plural form indicates that not just the Sun and Moon, but also Earth, moves.
Earth’s Diameter: The Quran also refers to Earth’s diameter in Aktar (plural of "diameter"), further suggesting its spherical nature.
O assembly of jinn and humans! If you can penetrate beyond the realms of the heavens and the earth, then do so. ˹But˺ you cannot do that without ˹Our˺ authority.55:33
- "Escape the diameters (Aktar) of the Heavens and the Earth if you can..." - Diameters are properties of circles or spheres, pointing to Earth’s spherical geometry.
Surface Spreading: The Quran uses Madadna to describe Earth's surface as "spread out," implying an increase in surface area over time, consistent with scientific knowledge of Earth's growth through accretion.
As for the earth, We spread it out and placed upon it firm mountains, and produced in it every type of pleasant plant—50:7
- "And the Earth—We have spread it out, and set thereon mountains standing firm."
Spherical Earth: Observations from space, as well as studies on Earth’s curvature, confirm its spherical shape. Rotational Movement: Earth's rotation causes day and night, as mentioned in the Quran’s Kullon Yajree. Diameters: The measurable dimensions of Earth's equatorial and polar diameters are consistent with its spherical shape. Spreading Surface: The gradual increase in Earth’s surface area due to tectonic activity and accretion aligns with the Quranic description.
At the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the belief in a flat, static Earth was dominant. The Quran’s descriptions were groundbreaking, offering an advanced understanding of Earth's shape and movement long before these concepts were scientifically confirmed.
The Quran's portrayal of Earth as a rotating sphere with a dynamic surface aligns with modern scientific discoveries. These insights, revealed 1400 years ago, demonstrate knowledge far beyond the understanding of the time, highlighting the Quran's remarkable accuracy.
