1400 years ago, it was unimaginable to think of hot water gushing from the deep ocean, but this phenomenon is mentioned in the Quran. Skeptics may argue that the Quran is mistaken about the heating of the oceans, as people could only observe geysers on land. However, modern oceanography has confirmed that hot water indeed escapes from the ocean floor in the form of hydrothermal vents, some of which can reach temperatures higher than 400 ºC.
Hydrothermal vents are fissures on the ocean floor where superheated water, sometimes over 400 ºC, is released from beneath the Earth’s crust. These vents, discovered in the late 20th century, are typically found in deep ocean trenches and are often associated with volcanic activity. One example is the Beebe vent in the Cayman Trough, the world's deepest hydrothermal vent, located about 5,000 meters (16,000 feet) below sea level. The temperature of the water coming out of these vents has been recorded at over 400 ºC (754 ºF), much hotter than boiling water at the Earth's surface. These vents play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystems at the ocean floor by supporting unique life forms that thrive in extreme conditions, relying on the chemicals released by the vents rather than sunlight for energy.
and when the seas are set on fire,81:6
The Arabic word سُجِّرَتْ (sujirat) means to be heated or set on fire. While geysers on land were known to people at the time, the concept of the oceans being heated from below was beyond human knowledge 1400 years ago. Yet today, we know that hydrothermal vents exist on the ocean floor, emitting extremely hot water from deep underground.
At the time of the Quran's revelation, no one could have known about the existence of hydrothermal vents beneath the ocean. These vents were discovered only in the late 20th century. So how could an unlettered man living 1400 years ago have known that the oceans were being heated in this way? The precise mention of heated oceans aligns remarkably with modern scientific discoveries, clearly showing the Quran's divine source. This is yet another example of how the Quran has described natural phenomena that were unknown at the time but are now confirmed by modern science.
