In the Quran, there is a reference to a "dreadful rain" that is linked to the destruction of the people of Lot (Lut) through a volcanic catastrophe. Skeptics have historically dismissed the idea of "dreadful rain" as a mistake, claiming that rain is simply condensed water vapor and cannot be associated with something harmful or dangerous. However, modern science now confirms the existence of acid rain, which can result from volcanic eruptions, and this rain can be highly damaging.
Volcanic eruptions release various gases into the atmosphere, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and water vapor (H2O). When sulfur dioxide reacts with water vapor in the atmosphere, it forms sulfuric acid (H2SO4), which can condense into fine particles, creating what we know as acid rain. This acid rain is known to cause damage to vegetation, buildings, and even aquatic ecosystems, making it a "dreadful" or destructive form of precipitation. Acid rain can also be linked to volcanic eruptions where massive amounts of volcanic gases are expelled, mixing with atmospheric moisture to create harmful rainfall.
In the Quran, there are two verses that describe a "dreadful rain" associated with the punishment of the people of Lot:
And We turned the cities ˹of Sodom and Gomorrah˺ upside down and rained upon them stones of baked clay.15:74
This refers to the volcanic destruction of the people of Lot, where volcanic stones and other material were ejected, including the potential for acid-laden rainfall.
pouring upon them a rain ˹of brimstone˺. How evil was the rain of those who had been warned!26:173
This describes the destructive nature of the rain, emphasizing that it was harmful, potentially referencing the acidic, volcanic rain that accompanied the destruction.
The Quranic descriptions align with what modern science has uncovered about volcanic eruptions and their effects on the atmosphere. Volcanic gases, such as sulfur dioxide, are well known to produce acid rain when they react with water vapor. The "dreadful rain" described in the Quran can be seen as a prophetic description of the harmful effects of acid rain that was not scientifically understood at the time.
