1400 years ago, the healing properties of honey were not understood, but the Quran mentions it as a source of healing for humanity. Today, we know that honey is not only nutritious but also has antibacterial properties that make it effective for wound healing and inhibiting microbial growth.
Honey’s medicinal qualities are largely due to its antibacterial activity. When honey is applied to wounds or burns, it prevents the growth of microbes, which accelerates the healing process. The antimicrobial properties in honey are mostly attributed to the enzymatic production of hydrogen peroxide. However, some types of honey, such as Manuka honey, display significant antibacterial effects even when hydrogen peroxide activity is blocked. This antimicrobial action is also linked to honey's low pH and high sugar content, which together create an environment hostile to bacteria. Scientific studies confirm that honey offers not only antibacterial benefits but also immunomodulatory effects that aid in tissue repair, making it a natural and effective remedy for healing wounds.
In Surah 16:68-69, the Quran refers to honey as a source of healing:
And your Lord inspired the bees: “Make ˹your˺ homes in the mountains, the trees, and in what people construct,16:68
and feed from ˹the flower of˺ any fruit ˹you please˺ and follow the ways your Lord has made easy for you.” From their bellies comes forth liquid of varying colours, in which there is healing for people. Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect.16:69
The term "shefa" (شفاء) in Arabic means "healing," and in this verse, it refers to the therapeutic properties of honey. The Quran mentions the healing power of honey long before modern science identified its antibacterial properties.
At the time of the Quran's revelation, people had no knowledge of microorganisms or the concept of antibiotics. The medicinal use of honey was not widely understood, yet the Quran described honey's ability to heal, a fact that modern science has only confirmed recently. This knowledge, presented in the Quran 1400 years ago, aligns with contemporary scientific findings that recognize honey’s antibacterial and healing properties.
