In Quran 47:15, the rivers in paradise are described as being made of water, milk, wine, and honey. These rivers are detailed with specific characteristics:
The description of the Paradise promised to the righteous is that in it are rivers of fresh water, rivers of milk that never changes in taste, rivers of wine delicious to drink, and rivers of pure honey. There they will ˹also˺ have all kinds of fruit, and forgiveness from their Lord. ˹Can they be˺ like those who will stay in the Fire forever, left to drink boiling water that will tear apart their insides?47:15
This description is significant in the context of viscosity, which is the measure of a fluid's resistance to flow. The order of the liquids mentioned — water, milk, wine, and honey — correlates with the viscosity of these substances, which is a concept not fully understood until modern times.
Viscosity is a property that describes how easily a fluid flows. Water has the lowest viscosity, making it the easiest to flow, followed by milk, wine, and honey, which has the highest viscosity, meaning it flows the slowest. The viscosity of a substance can be determined by its resistance to deformation when force is applied. For example: - Water has a low viscosity because it flows easily and is considered a standard for liquid flow. - Milk is more viscous than water due to the presence of fats and proteins. - Wine has a higher viscosity than milk due to its alcohol and sugar content. - Honey is the most viscous of all the liquids mentioned, with a much higher resistance to flow due to its high sugar content and thickness. These observations about viscosity were made only recently using modern scientific instruments, but the Quran’s reference to these liquids in a specific order (water, milk, wine, and honey) 1400 years ago aligns perfectly with their relative viscosities.
