Allah, Most High, says in the Qur'an:
Does he not know that Allah sees ˹all˺?96:14
But no! If he does not desist, We will certainly drag him by the forelock—96:15
I have put my trust in Allah—my Lord and your Lord. There is no living creature that is not completely under His control. Surely my Lord’s Way is perfect justice.11:56
The wicked will be recognized by their appearance, then will be seized by ˹their˺ forelocks and feet.55:41
Imam Ahmad recorded in his Musnad that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "If a person is afflicted with sorrow or anxiety and he supplicates: 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant, my forelock is in Your hand (i.e., You have total mastery over me)...' Allah will remove his sorrow and anxiety and replace them with relief." (Ahmad)
Al-Alusi, in his commentary on Surah Al-'Alaq (96:15-16), explained that the forelock in the Qur'an is a symbol of the human capacity for lying and error. This part of the head is singled out as it is linked to these traits. He also noted that the forelock was often a source of pride in the pre-Islamic Arab world, and its burning symbolized humiliation. Scientific Facts: The human brain consists of four major lobes: frontal, occipital, temporal, and parietal. The frontal lobe, located in the front part of the brain behind the forehead, is primarily responsible for personality, speech, behavior, and decision-making.
Primary Motor Area: Controls the left side of the body. Secondary Motor Area: Helps with the left side's mobility. Frontal Eye Field: Controls eye movement. Motor Speech Area (Broca's area): Coordinates speech. Frontal Cortex: Located directly behind the forehead, it plays a significant role in decision-making, personality formation, and judgment. The Role of the Frontal Cortex in Behavior: It governs a person’s behavior, including truthfulness, lying, righteousness, and sinfulness. Studies show that damage to the frontal cortex can lead to significant behavioral changes, including poor decision-making, loss of judgment, and an inclination toward criminal behavior.
The frontal lobe is also considered the center for the impulse to lie. Studies suggest that intellectual activities related to deception are primarily located in this part of the brain. Scientific Interpretation of the Qur'anic Verses: The Qur'an’s reference to the forelock as "lying" and "sinful" aligns with its anatomical and behavioral functions: Allah mentions that He controls the forelock, indicating His total control over an individual's actions and decisions, including behavior like lying. When the Qur'an says "We will catch him by the forelock," it highlights how Allah has control over the human actions that stem from the frontal lobe.
The forelock, being the physical location of the frontal lobe, is central to human decisions and behavior. In the Qur'anic verse where Allah says, "There is not a moving creature but He has grasp of its forelock," this reflects the total control of Allah over all living beings, specifically their actions.
Recent scientific discoveries have shown that the frontal lobe is responsible for decision-making, impulse control, and behavioral traits. These facts, which were not known in earlier times, now match the descriptions found in the Qur'an.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, would often supplicate, acknowledging that his forelock was in Allah’s hands, symbolizing total submission to Allah's will. In Western studies, devices are even being developed to measure truthfulness through signals emitted from the forelock, further proving the centrality of this part of the body in determining human actions
The miraculous point of the Qur'anic verses and the hadith is the precise reference to the forelock and its role in decision-making, sinfulness, and righteousness. Modern science confirms that the frontal lobe, located in the forelock, is indeed responsible for regulating human behavior. The Qur'an, written over 1,400 years ago, alluded to these functions long before scientists could discover them, highlighting the divine wisdom of its revelations.
