Scientists have discovered that crows exhibit behaviors that resemble human funerals when one of their own dies. These behaviors are thought to serve multiple purposes: - Gathering Around the Deceased: Crows form groups around a dead body, often showing signs of vigilance and concern. These gatherings can sometimes include a behavior akin to mourning, where crows stay close to the deceased, sometimes referred to as a "murder" of crows. - Learning from Death: Crows use these funerals to potentially learn about dangers and predators in their environment. By observing the area around a dead crow, they can gather important survival information, which contributes to the group's safety.
The Quran mentions the behavior of crows in the context of the story of Cain and Abel, specifically in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:31):
Then Allah sent a crow digging ˹a grave˺ in the ground ˹for a dead crow˺, in order to show him how to bury the corpse of his brother. He cried, “Alas! Have I ˹even˺ failed to be like this crow and bury the corpse of my brother?” So he became regretful. 5:31
- The Crow’s Role in Burial: In this Quranic verse, a crow is sent to show Cain how to properly bury the body of his brother Abel. The crow demonstrates how to hide the corpse by digging into the earth, a process analogous to burial rituals among humans. This description mirrors modern observations of crows’ natural behaviors around the deceased. - Symbolism of Mourning: Just as humans mourn the dead and take care in burying the deceased, the crow’s actions emphasize a natural understanding of the importance of death and burial. This can be interpreted as an early indication of the social and emotional intelligence of animals, particularly crows, long before modern science acknowledged such behaviors. Modern science has confirmed that crows hold funerals for their dead, a behavior that was previously unknown to humans. The Quran mentions the crow's actions related to burial in a story that aligns with this discovery. The remarkable accuracy of the Quran in this regard raises intriguing questions about how such knowledge could have been available centuries ago.
