Allah says in the Qur'an:
I do swear by the Day of Judgment!75:1
And I do swear by the self-reproaching soul!75:2
Do people think We cannot reassemble their bones?75:3
Yes ˹indeed˺! We are ˹most˺ capable of restoring ˹even˺ their very fingertips.75:4
Al-Qurtubi and Zajjaj explained these verses by mentioning that some people had doubts about resurrection, claiming that Allah cannot bring the dead back to life or reassemble their bones. In response, Allah assures that He is not only able to resurrect the dead but even to put together the tiniest parts of the human body, like the tips of the fingers, perfectly. This emphasizes Allah’s power to do what may seem impossible to us. At the time of these scholars, they did not have modern medical tools that we have today, which allow us to understand these details about the human body more clearly. However, the Qur'an's description was precise even before these discoveries.
In 1823, Czech anatomist Purkinje discovered that fingerprints are unique to every person, consisting of different patterns like arches, loops, and whorls. Later, in 1858, British scholar William Herschel realized that fingerprints are unique to each individual, making them an exclusive identifier. In 1877, Dr. Henry Faulds developed a method for printing fingerprints onto paper. Dr. Francis Galton, in 1892, confirmed that a person’s fingerprints remain the same throughout their life, no matter what happens to them. He even found that fingerprints are visible on unborn babies when they are just 100 to 120 days old in the womb. By 1893, Scotland Yard began using fingerprints as a reliable way to identify people, which led to fingerprints being used in police investigations worldwide. Since then, scientists have confirmed that no two people have the same fingerprints. Even after comparing people from different races, fingerprints have proven to be unique for every individual.
Fingerprints form during the fourth month of pregnancy and remain unchanged throughout a person’s life. These fingerprints are created from the skin's ridges, known as flexures, which are unique to every individual. The patterns on each person’s fingers differ from one another and are not affected by age, disease, or injury.
Allah's words in Surah Al-Qiyamah (75:1-4) highlight a miraculous truth. Allah swears by the Day of Resurrection and by the self-reproaching soul (the believer), affirming that He can resurrect the dead and reassemble their bones. But the most striking part of this is the reference to the fingertips, a tiny yet complex part of the human body. The fingertip may seem like a small detail, but it plays a crucial role in a person’s identity. The Qur'an mentions this specific part of the body to show that if Allah can perfectly reassemble something as delicate as the fingertip, He can easily reassemble a whole human being after death, no matter how decayed the body might be. In the early 20th century, some criminals tried to alter their fingerprints by cutting off their finger skin and replacing it with tissue from other parts of their body. But to their surprise, the new skin grew back with the same unique fingerprint patterns. This is a clear demonstration of how the fingerprint is an unchangeable characteristic of every person. Even after years of research, no two people’s fingerprints have ever been found to match, making fingerprints an ideal and reliable way to identify individuals.
The ability of the fingertip to remain unique throughout a person’s life shows the incredible power of Allah’s creation. The delicate lines on our fingertips, which cover only a small area, are a testimony to Allah’s perfect design. These unique ridges on each person's fingers serve as the most accurate form of personal identification, not just in this life but also in the Hereafter. This is a wonderful miracle of Allah's creation. Allah says in the Qur'an:
We will show them Our signs in the universe and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that this ˹Quran˺ is the truth. Is it not enough that your Lord is a Witness over all things?41:53
This verse encourages us to reflect on the signs Allah has placed in the world and within our own bodies, including the miraculous design of our fingertips. It’s a reminder of Allah’s power and wisdom, which is evident even in the smallest details of His creation.
