The Qur'an mentioned the importance of bones long before modern science discovered their full significance. In Soorah Maryam, when Prophet Zachariah, peace be upon him, prayed for a son despite his wife’s old age and his own weakened bones, Allah revealed in the Qur'an:
and kind to his parents. He was neither arrogant nor disobedient.19:14
This verse connects the condition of bones with fertility. Modern science has now confirmed that bones play vital roles in the body. They are not only structures that support us, but they also store important nutrients like phosphorus and calcium, which help regulate heart function and muscle movements. Additionally, bones are responsible for producing blood cells, such as white and red blood cells, throughout a person's life. The health of our bones is directly linked to the nervous system, which also affects our ability to reproduce—exactly as the Qur'an mentions.
A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Every one of the children of Adam has been created with three hundred and sixty joints. So, whoever declares Allah's greatness, praises Him, declares His oneness, glorifies Allah, seeks forgiveness from Him, removes a stone, or thorn, or bone from people’s path, and enjoins what is good and forbids what is evil, to the number of those three hundred and sixty joints, will walk that day having removed himself from Hell." (Reported by Muslim) Today, science has confirmed that the human body has 206 bones, with some of them described as follows: Head: 28 bones Cervical vertebrae: 7 Thoracic vertebrae: 12 Lumbar vertebrae: 5 Sacral vertebrae: 5 Coccyx (tailbone): 4 Ribs: 24 Sternum (breastbone): 3 Scapula (shoulder blades): 2 Clavicle (collarbones): 2 Upper limbs: 16 bones (arms and hands) Lower limbs: 28 bones (legs and feet) If we add additional tendinous bones in the thumbs and toes, the total number of bones in the human body is 360. This matches the Prophet’s ﷺ statement about the number of joints in the body. Furthermore, scientists estimate the total number of body joints to be 360 when considering the joints in the spine, chest, upper limbs, lower limbs, and pelvis. The Prophet ﷺ's statement aligns perfectly with these scientific findings. He also explained how to earn rewards for these 360 joints, emphasizing simple good deeds like removing harmful objects from the path or performing acts of worship. He said: "A human being has three hundred and sixty joints for each of which he must give alms. The people asked him: Who is capable of doing this? He replied: It may be mucus in the mosque which you bury, and something which you remove from the road; but if you do not find such, two rak'ahs in the forenoon will be sufficient for you." (Reported by Ahmad, Abu Dawood, Ibn Hibban, and Ibn Khuzaimah) This demonstrates how the Prophet ﷺ, with divine knowledge, provided guidance that has been confirmed by modern science. The number of joints in the human body and the importance of caring for them was clearly known long before such details were discovered by researchers. This is a clear example of the miracles found in the teachings of the Qur'an and the Hadith.
