Modern science has revealed that the heart contains its own intrinsic neural network, with over 40,000 neurons, a discovery within the field of neurocardiology. This network allows the heart to process information, communicate with the brain, and even exhibit forms of memory and decision-making. Signals from the heart to the brain are more numerous than those sent from the brain to the heart, emphasizing the heart’s role as a sensory and processing organ. The Quran references the heart’s ability to reason in Surah Al-Hajj (22:46):
Have they not travelled throughout the land so their hearts may reason, and their ears may listen? Indeed, it is not the eyes that are blind, but it is the hearts in the chests that grow blind.22:46
The significance of the heart in the Quran gives an opportunity to reflect on the heart's influence and health beyond that which is physical. These complexities of the hearts power was emphasised hundreds of years before it was researched and theorised. This topic provides an important reminder for us to prioritise the health and condition of our heart; with the Quran descriptions of the heart hardening or the negative effects of arrogance or jealousy for example, or the process of purifying one's heart through contentment and gratitude. The power of the heart and its relevance on our wellbeing both physically and spiritually is showcased in our Quran.
