1400 years ago, it was unknown that plants emit invisible light as a byproduct of photosynthesis. Today, scientists, including those at NASA, study chlorophyll fluorescence—a faint glow emitted by plants during photosynthesis that we cannot see with the naked eye.
NASA's research on plant fluorescence reveals that plants emit a reddish glow, detectable in space. This fluorescence, particularly in chlorophyll, provides insights into plant health and photosynthesis. Olive oil has also been found to exhibit high levels of fluorescence due to its chlorophyll content. In the Quran, a verse in Surah An-Nur (24:35) describes light that doesn't require fire to shine, which can be seen as an allegory for fluorescence:
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. His light is like a niche in which there is a lamp, the lamp is in a crystal, the crystal is like a shining star, lit from ˹the oil of˺ a blessed olive tree, ˹located˺ neither to the east nor the west, whose oil would almost glow, even without being touched by fire. Light upon light! Allah guides whoever He wills to His light. And Allah sets forth parables for humanity. For Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things.24:35
This can be understood as referring to chlorophyll fluorescence, where the oil (from olive trees) emits light without fire, long before this was scientifically recognized.
How could an unlettered man 1400 years ago have known about plant fluorescence? This knowledge aligns with modern findings about light emissions in plants, specifically the glow produced by chlorophyll. Moreover, the Quran accurately describes extra virgin olive oil as the most fluorescent of all vegetable oils, which was confirmed by scientific research long after the Quran was revealed . This raises the intrigue of how such precise scientific knowledge was known over a millennium ago. Whilst these verses might not necessarily reference the scientific findings mentioned here, they showcase how, even the most hard to imagine realities explained by the Quran, can be shown to be permissible with modern scientific discoveries.
