For centuries, people believed that when animals die, their bodies simply decay and disappear. It was not widely understood that animals could be preserved over millions of years, turning into fossils. Fossilization occurs when organic material is replaced by minerals, preserving the shape and structure of the organism for millions of years. Fossilized stomach contents, in particular, are extremely rare, but occasionally, remarkable finds occur, such as a 13-foot marine predator found with another animal inside its belly, preserving the stomach contents for posterity.
Fossilization, including the preservation of stomach contents (bromalites), is an extremely rare event in paleontology. This was only fully understood and confirmed in recent times, yet such a process was subtly referenced in the Quran.
In the Quran, the story of Prophet Jonah (Yunus) describes how he was swallowed by a whale. While the Quran doesn't explicitly mention fossilization, the verse about Jonah being inside the whale’s belly can be understood as alluding to the idea of something being preserved inside another organism’s body, similar to the rare fossilized stomach contents found by scientists today.
Then the whale engulfed him while he was blameworthy.37:142
Had he not ˹constantly˺ glorified ˹Allah˺,37:143
he would have certainly remained in its belly until the Day of Resurrection.37:144
The phrase "stayed in its belly until the Day they are raised" can be understood as referencing something preserved inside the belly, potentially alluding to the concept of fossilization. Just as the stomach contents of ancient creatures can be preserved for millions of years, the Quran hints at the notion of a being being preserved within another for an extended period.
The preservation of organic material, such as stomach contents or entire creatures, over millions of years was not known 1400 years ago. The concept of fossilization, especially in the rare case of preserved stomach contents, was discovered only recently with advancements in paleontology. The Quran's subtle reference to something being preserved within another living creature, like Jonah inside the whale, aligns with this modern understanding, suggesting an insight far ahead of its time.
The Quran's mention of Jonah staying in the belly of the whale until the Day of Resurrection aligns with the modern scientific discovery of fossilization, particularly fossilized stomach contents. This rare phenomenon, where animals and their contents are preserved for millions of years, is a recent discovery, yet the Quran alludes to a similar idea centuries ago. This raises the question: How could an unlettered man 1400 years ago have known such a concept? The answer may point to a deeper understanding of nature, reflected in the Quran.
