The Quran mentions Pharaoh proclaiming that rivers flowed beneath him, which has raised skepticism due to the apparent lack of rivers near the pyramids today. However, recent discoveries have revealed evidence of a now-dried river branch of the Nile, the Ahramat Branch, which ran within walking distance of the pyramids during the Old Kingdom. This historical revelation aligns remarkably with the Quranic description.
In Surah Az-Zukhruf (43:51), Pharaoh is quoted as saying:
And Pharaoh called out to his people, boasting, “O my people! Am I not sovereign over Egypt as well as ˹all˺ these streams flowing at my feet? Can you not see?43:51
The verse describes Pharaoh boasting about the rivers beneath his control. At first glance, this might seem to conflict with the current geography of the pyramids, which stand in the desert. However, this statement is consistent with ancient conditions when the Nile’s branches were much closer.
Research published by National Geographic in 2024 highlights findings by a team of archaeologists and geophysicists regarding the Ahramat Branch, a dried arm of the Nile that once ran close to the Giza Plateau:
The river branch was used to transport materials and workers to the pyramid construction sites. It served as a "highway," allowing heavy building materials to reach the pyramids. Proximity to the Pyramids: At certain points, the branch came within a few hundred feet of the pyramids. Many pyramids had causeways connecting them to temples situated on the ancient riverbanks, which doubled as harbors. Size of the River: Geophysical surveys showed that the Ahramat branch was vast, with a width comparable to the modern Nile at certain points.
The discovery of the ancient waterway is recent, relying on advanced geophysical surveys and soil analysis. Yet, the Quranic description accurately reflects this ancient geographical reality. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was unlettered, lived in a region far removed from Egyptian history and geography. This raises the question: how could such a detail about rivers near the pyramids be known 1400 years ago? The mention of rivers beneath Pharaoh in the Quran is validated by modern archaeology, which has uncovered the Ahramat branch of the Nile running close to the pyramids during their construction. This alignment underscores the Quran’s historical accuracy. As skeptics initially doubted the Quranic claim due to the absence of visible rivers today, this discovery provides further evidence of the Quran’s consistency with historical facts.
