After 'breathing His Own spirit' into Adam, Allah commanded the angels and Iblis to prostrate (bow down) to him. All the angels prostrated. Iblis, a jinn of previous high status who would stay with the angels, did not obey this command. Shahr bin Haushab described that, when there was mischief on the earth, Allah sent an army of angels to separate them off onto remote lands and Iblis was one of those who was captured and taken to the heavens, and he stayed there.
And ˹remember˺ when We said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam,” so they all did—but not Iblîs, who was one of the jinn, but he rebelled against the command of his Lord. Would you then take him and his descendants as patrons instead of Me, although they are your enemy? What an evil alternative for the wrongdoers ˹to choose˺!18:50
Allah asked, “O Iblîs! What is the matter with you that you did not join others in prostration?”15:32
He replied, “It is not for me to prostrate to a human You created from sounding clay moulded from black mud.”15:33
Allah commanded, “Then get out of Paradise, for you are truly cursed.15:34
Satan appealed/made dua to Allah asking for his punishment to be delayed until the Day of Judgement. Allah accepted his appeal. Satan blamed Allah for his sin and did not repent, instead he vowed to 'lie in ambush' for the believers, attacking us from all sides.
He appealed, “Then delay my end until the Day of their resurrection.”7:14
Allah said, “You are delayed ˹until the appointed Day˺.”7:15
He said, “For leaving me to stray I will lie in ambush for them on Your Straight Path.7:16
I will approach them from their front, their back, their right, their left, and then You will find most of them ungrateful.”7:17
Allah said, “Get out of Paradise! You are disgraced and rejected! I will certainly fill up Hell with you and your followers all together.”7:18
His arrogance led him to disobey the command of Allah and consequently be banished from paradise. He thought because he was made of smokeless fire, and Adam of black mud, he was better than him. But it is Adam who had the honour of being fashioned by Allah Himself and part of His being breathed into him.
Allah asked, “What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?” He replied, “I am better than he is: You created me from fire and him from clay.”7:12
Allah said, “Then get down from Paradise! It is not for you to be arrogant here. So get out! You are truly one of the disgraced.”7:13
And incite whoever you can of them with your voice, mobilize against them all your cavalry and infantry, manipulate them in their wealth and children, and make them promises.” But Satan promises them nothing but delusion.17:64
And ˹remember˺ when We said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam,” so they all did—but not Iblîs, who protested, “Should I prostrate to the one You have created from mud?”17:61
Adding, “Do you see this one you honoured above me? If you delay my end until the Day of Judgment, I will certainly take hold of his descendants, except for a few.”17:62
Allah responded, “Be gone! Whoever of them follows you, Hell will surely be the reward for all of you—an ample reward.17:63
