After Abel was killed, Seth (Shith) was born. The Prophet ﷺ said that 'Allah sent down one hundred and four scriptures, of them were fifty upon Seth' [Al-Bidayah Wan-Nihayah 1/230]. We are told by Ibn Ishaq that before Adam died, he took a covenant with Seth, teaching him prayer and warning him of the great flood to come. He explained that man were not to be left alone. He also said that all humans came from the progeny of Seth as all the other children did not have any lineage.
On a Friday, when Adam died, his body was embalmed and his grave clothes from Allah. Ibn Ishaq narrated that the sun eclipsed for seven days and seven nights following this.
One narration says “When Adam was about to die, he said to his sons, ‘My sons, I do desire to eat from Heaven’s fruits.’ As his sons were going to get him what he wanted, they were received by angels who were carrying axes and spades. The angels asked, ‘Sons of Adam, what do you want and where are you going?’ The sons of Adam said, ‘Our father is sick and desires the fruits of Heaven.’ The angels said, ‘Go back; your father had been fated to die.’ When Eve saw the angels, she recognized them so she tried to seek Adam’s protection. Adam said, ‘Go away from me, it was you who weakened me; leave me with my Lord’s angels.’ Angels then took his soul, bathed him, shrouded him, dug his grave, and prayed for him. Then, they entered his grave and placed him in it. They left the grave and scattered dust over him and said, ‘Sons of Adam, this is how you bury your dead.’” [Abdullah bin Imam Ahmad 5/136, Al-Bidayah wan Nihayah, 1/98; Ibn Kathir on this hadith says that it was narrated by Ubayy bin Ka’b]
There are differing opinions as to how long Adam lived, Ibn Abbas and Abu Hurairah say 1000 years.
After Adam's death, Seth then built upon the legacy of his father, he is believed to be a prophet - as per the hadith mentioning the 50 scriptures sent to him; this is narrated by Ibn Hibban [361].
Seth passed this legacy onto Enos, who passed it down to Kenan, who passed it down to Mahalalel - who the Persians claimed to be the Kind of Seven Regions. He was the first man to cut trees, build cities and castles. He built Babylon and ruled successfully for 40 years.
The legacy was then passed onto Jared, his son and then Enoch (Idris) - the next prophet we will discuss.
