In paradise, Allah taught Adam the names of things. Ibn Abbas said these were the names of those objects through which people recognise things and communicate with each other. Mujahid and others explain that Allah taught Adam the names of dishes and pots, telling him the names of every thing.
Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah created Adam, making him 60 cubits tall. When He created him, He said to him, "Go and greet that group of angels, and listen to their reply, for it will be your greeting (salutation) and the greeting (salutations of your offspring." So, Adam said (to the angels), As-Salamu Alaikum (i.e. Peace be upon you). The angels said, "As-salamu Alaika wa Rahmatu-l-lahi" (i.e. Peace and Allah's Mercy be upon you). Thus the angels added to Adam's salutation the expression, 'Wa Rahmatu-l-lahi,' Any person who will enter Paradise will resemble Adam (in appearance and figure). People have been decreasing in stature since Adam's creation. [Bukhari 3326]
Al-Hasan Al-Basri explains that when Allah was creating Adam, the angels said 'Our Lord does not create any creature but that we are more knowledgeable than that creature', so Allah asked the angels if this was still true. The angels respond that Allah should be glorified beyond the possibility that anyone could acquire His Knowledge except that which He has taught them. Just as in 2:225 when Allah says "...He ˹fully˺ knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills ˹to reveal˺…"
He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if what you say is true?”2:31
They replied, “Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are truly the All-Knowing, All-Wise.”2:32
Allah said, “O Adam! Inform them of their names.” Then when Adam did, Allah said, “Did I not tell you that I know the secrets of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you conceal?”2:33
Allah knows all secrets. It is also said that this means that Allah knows what we reveal and what we conceal. For example, he knew Satan concealed his pride and arrogance towards Adam.
He warned Adam to live within the bounds He had made acceptable for him. If he stayed within these bounds, he would have (stayed in) Jannah but if he transgressed, he would lose Jannah. Following Allah's command was for his own good.
˹Allah said,˺ “O Adam! Live with your wife in Paradise and eat from wherever you please, but do not approach this tree, or else you will be wrongdoers.”7:19
There are different opinions concerning this tree. One suggests that it was a vine, the Jews interpreted this as wheat and Wahb bin Munabbih said it's seeds are softer than butter and sweeter than honey. However, Abu Malik said this was a palm tree, Mujahid said a fig tree. Abul-Aaliah said if you ate from that tree, it would make you pass wind - and heaven is not a place to do such a thing!
In regards to where this heaven was, the majority opinion is that this paradise was in a heaven called 'Jannatul-Ma'wa' (the Garden of Abode), some others say it cannot be this heaven as Adam would not have been forbidden from the tree there. Allah knows best.
And indeed, We once made a covenant with Adam, but he forgot, and ˹so˺ We did not find determination in him.20:115
So We cautioned, “O Adam! This is surely an enemy to you and to your wife. So do not let him drive you both out of Paradise, for you ˹O Adam˺ would then suffer ˹hardship˺.20:117
Here it is guaranteed that you will never go hungry or unclothed,20:118
nor will you ˹ever˺ suffer from thirst or ˹the sun’s˺ heat.” 20:119
But Satan deceived them, telling them that going outside of these bounds would be better for them and that he was advising them sincerely. Satan took a pledge to emphasise what he was whispering, his whispers beautified their sin. He said that eating from that tree will allow them to gain eternal happiness, bounty and a dominion which will never end. His whispers were sheer delusion and falsehood.
But Satan whispered to him, saying, “O Adam! Shall I show you the Tree of Immortality and a kingdom that does not fade away?”20:120
So they both ate from the tree and then their nakedness was exposed to them, prompting them to cover themselves with leaves from Paradise. So Adam disobeyed his Lord, and ˹so˺ lost his way.20:121
Eve was the first to eat from the tree, this incited Adam to do too. It is unlikely there were fully naked, Allah says elsewhere "O children of Adam! Do not let Satan deceive you as he tempted your parents out of Paradise and caused their cover to be removed in order to expose their nakedness…" Ibn Abbas narrated about this verse that these garments were of leaves of the fig tree.
Then Satan tempted them in order to expose what was hidden of their nakedness. He said, “Your Lord has forbidden this tree to you only to prevent you from becoming angels or immortals.”7:20
And he swore to them, “I am truly your sincere advisor.”7:21
So he brought about their fall through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their nakedness was exposed to them, prompting them to cover themselves with leaves from Paradise. Then their Lord called out to them, “Did I not forbid you from that tree and ˹did I not˺ tell you that Satan is your sworn enemy?”7:22
They replied, “Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will certainly be losers.”7:23
Allah said, “Descend as enemies to each other. You will find in the earth a residence and provision for your appointed stay.”7:24
He added, “There you will live, there you will die, and from there you will be resurrected.”7:25
They recognised their wrongdoing, asked for forgiveness and were forgiven. Amongst other things, it shows the importance of humility and submission in times of need. They were then put onto Earth with Eve, the mother and father of humanity. Satan too, as the sworn enemy of humanity.
Then Adam was inspired with words ˹of prayer˺ by his Lord, so He accepted his repentance. Surely He is the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful.2:37
Then his Lord chose him ˹for His grace˺, accepted his repentance, and guided him ˹rightly˺.20:122
We said, “Descend all of you! Then when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows it, there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve.2:38
But those who disbelieve and deny Our signs will be the residents of the Fire. They will be there forever.”2:39
O humanity! Be mindful of your Lord Who created you from a single soul, and from it He created its mate, and through both He spread countless men and women. And be mindful of Allah—in Whose Name you appeal to one another—and ˹honour˺ family ties. Surely Allah is ever Watchful over you.4:1
He is the One Who has placed you as successors on earth and elevated some of you in rank over others, so He may test you with what He has given you. Surely your Lord is swift in punishment, but He is certainly All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.6:165
Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari describes that when Adam was sent down to earth, Allah taught him workmanship of everything and fruits from paradise - except that they change.
Mohammad bin Ishaq described that Eve was created from the shortest rib of Adam's left side while he was sleeping, and then this place was dressed (bandaged) with flesh. Hence we see in hadith collected in Bukhari [5186] that the Prophet ﷺ said "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not hurt (trouble) his neighbour. And I advise you to take care of the women, for they are created from a rib and the most crooked portion of the rib is its upper part; if you try to straighten it, it will break, and if you leave it, it will remain crooked, so I urge you to take care of the women."
In Sahih Muslim [854], the Prophet ﷺ said "The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created. on it he was made to enter Paradise, on it he was expelled from it. And the last hour will take place on no day other than Friday."
Allah tells us,
Allah said, “Descend, both of you, from here together ˹with Satan˺ as enemies to each other. Then when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray ˹in this life˺ nor suffer ˹in the next˺.20:123
But whoever turns away from My Reminder will certainly have a miserable life, then We will raise them up blind on the Day of Judgment.”20:124
They will cry, “My Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, although I used to see?”20:125
Ibn Jarir said that the first food Adam ate on earth was when Jibreel came to him and gave him seven grains of wheat which he sowed into the earth and later harvested, kneaded and baked into bread. Their first clothing was from sheep's wool which Adam separated and spun into clothes.
