Jesus and his disciples were commanded to fast for 30 days. When their period of fasting came to an end, they asked Jesus to pray for a table spread of food from heaven. They wanted it to be a festival, for anyone and everyone to eat from as a sign that Allah had accepted their fast. Jesus warned them saying "Have Taqwa of Allah! And do not ask for this, for it may become a trial for you, but trust in Allah for your provisions, if you are truly believers." The disciples reiterated their intentions and Jesus asked Allah for what they wished for.
Allah answered his prayer, and they witnessed the food coming down from the clouds. Throughout, Jesus was praying that this would be a means of good for them.
˹Remember˺ when the disciples asked, “O Jesus, son of Mary! Would your Lord be willing to send down to us a table spread with food from heaven?” Jesus answered, “Fear Allah if you are ˹truly˺ believers.”5:112
They said, “We ˹only˺ wish to eat from it to reassure our hearts, to verify you are indeed truthful to us, and to become its witnesses.”5:113
Jesus, son of Mary, prayed, “O Allah, our Lord! Send us from heaven a table spread with food as a feast for us—the first and last of us—and as a sign from You. Provide for us! You are indeed the Best Provider.”5:114
Allah answered, “I am sending it down to you. But whoever among you denies afterwards will be subjected to a torment I have never inflicted on anyone of My creation.”5:115
It is said that Jesus did not have a family, home or wealth. He was able to buy food with the money his mother made spinning wool.
Jesus said to his disciples: "As the kings and rulers have left the wisdom for you, you leave the Dunya (the materials) for them." He also said: "Ask me, I am a kind-hearted person, and I am insignificant in my own eyes."
He also said to his disciples: "Eat of barley breads, and drink of pure water, and go out from this world feeling safe (from harm). The sweetness of this world is the bitterness of the Hereafter, and the bitterness of this world is the sweetness of the Hereafter. Alläh's true slaves do not live in luxuries. I am saying truly that the worst of you is a scholar who gives preference to his desires over his knowledge. Verily, all of the people are like (equal to) him."
It is also reported from him, saying: "O weak son of Adam! Fear Alläh wherever you may be, live in this world like a guest, and take the mosques as a home, and teach your eyes to cry, and your body to endure, and your heart to reflect. And do not worry about tomorrow's provision, because it is a sin."
