Jesus continued his mission despite facing threats from evil. Those against him accused him of using magic, breaking the law, and being allied with the devil. When they noticed that many poor people followed him, they started plotting against him.
The Sanhedrin, a top council of Jewish leaders, gathered to scheme against Jesus. When attempts to stop him failed, they decided to kill him. The chief priests held secret meetings to figure out the best way to get rid of Jesus.
They decided on killing him, so devised a plot to do so. Al-Hasan Al-Basri and Muhammad Ibn shaq said that his name was Dawood Ibn Yoora and he ordered that ‘Jesus be killed and crucified. They surrounded him in an house in Bait AlMaqdis one night. But before they entered, Allah made one the companions with him appear like Jesus, and He raised Jesus from the roof the house to the heaven.
Ibn Abi Hatim narrated that “When Allah intended to raise Jesus up to the heaven, he came out to visit his companions and in the house he found twelve men. He said, “Among you is the one who will deny me twelve times, after having believed in me.” Then he said, “Which of you will have my likeness cast upon him and be killed in my place, then he will be with me in my rank (in Paradise)?” On hearing this, a youth, who was among the youngest of them, stood up; but ‘Jesus said to him, “Sit down.” Then he repeated his request to them, and the young man stood up again, but he said to him once more, “Sit down.” Then he repeated his request to them for a third time and the young man stood up again and said, “I.” ‘Jesus then said, “Let it be you.” And so Jesus' likeness was cast upon him and Jesus was raised up.4
They Jews entered and found the young man who Allah made look like Jesus. They took him, thinking that he was Jesus and crucified him. They placed thorns on his head, in order to humiliate him. Most of the Christians, who had not witnessed what happened to Jesus, accepted the Jews’ claim that they had crucified him and because of that, they went far astray. Allah, The Most High, strongly refutes this in the Quran, showcasing the truth of what really happened.5
And the disbelievers made a plan ˹against Jesus˺, but Allah also planned—and Allah is the best of planners.3:54
˹Remember˺ when Allah said, “O Jesus! I will take you and raise you up to Myself. I will deliver you from those who disbelieve, and elevate your followers above the disbelievers until the Day of Judgment. Then to Me you will ˹all˺ return, and I will settle all your disputes.3:55
˹They were condemned˺ for breaking their covenant, rejecting Allah’s signs, killing the prophets unjustly, and for saying, “Our hearts are unreceptive!”—it is Allah Who has sealed their hearts for their disbelief, so they do not believe except for a few—4:155
and for their denial and outrageous accusation against Mary,4:156
and for boasting, “We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.” But they neither killed nor crucified him—it was only made to appear so. Even those who argue for this ˹crucifixion˺ are in doubt. They have no knowledge whatsoever—only making assumptions. They certainly did not kill him.4:157
The people then split into 3 groups: (1) Jacobites who believed that it was God who was with them for a while and then went back up to the heavens (2) Nestorians believed that Jesus was the son of God and then was lifted up (3) the true believers understood that Jesus was a pious salve of Allah who was ascended to heaven after being amongst his people.
