Some time after Joshua, Ezekiel was sent as a prophet to the Israelites.
According to Ibn Ishaq, the Isralites fled out of fear of a plague and settled in a new area. Allah commanded their death, and they all fell dead. After a few centuries, Ezekiel wandered by them and was asked whether he wanted them to be brought back to life. To which he responded yes. So, by the power of Allah, he was commanded to call the corpse back to life. Their bones began to have flesh and they came back to life, praising Allah.
According to Ibn Abbas, the background is that there was a town called Dawardan whose people fled out of fear of a plague. Those in the town and those who tried to escape all died. Ezekiel passed by them, and Allah asked him whether he wants to see how Allah can bring people back to life. He said yes in order to marvel over the power of Allah. So, through Allah's power, Ezekiel called the bones to gather up and the people come back to life. He then called the flesh, blood and clothes to return to their bones and the bodies were commanded to rise up. As they did so, they praised Allah, The Almighty.
This is the story mentioned in the below verse.
Have you ˹O Prophet˺ not seen those who fled their homes in the thousands for fear of death? Allah said to them, “Die!” then He gave them life. Surely Allah is ever Bountiful to humanity, but most people are ungrateful.2:243
The story of the dead people (2:244 above) also indicates that no caution can ever avert destiny and that there is no refuge from Allah, but to Allah Himself. These people departed from their land fleeing the epidemic and seeking to enjoy a long life. What they earned was the opposite of what they sought, as death came quickly and instantaneously and seized them all.
