After Noah warned his people for 950 years, his mission was complete and he gave his people a sufficient chance to turn back to the truth. Before their punishment, he was commanded to build a large ship.
And it was revealed to Noah, “None of your people will believe except those who already have. So do not be distressed by what they have been doing.11:36
Indeed, Noah cried out to Us, and how excellent are We in responding!37:75
We delivered him and his family from the great distress,37:76
and made his descendants the sole survivors.37:77
Noah's people had harmed him in every way they could, so he prayed to Allah for assistance. Allah sent down news as comfort to him for his efforts, that he should not grieve and that soon He will be sending help.
And ˹remember˺ when Noah had cried out to Us earlier, so We responded to him and delivered him and his family from the great distress.21:76
They threatened, “If you do not desist, O Noah, you will surely be stoned ˹to death˺.”26:116
Noah prayed, “My Lord! My people have truly rejected me.26:117
So judge between me and them decisively, and save me and the believers with me.”26:118
Before them, the people of Noah denied ˹the truth˺ and rejected Our servant, calling ˹him˺ insane. And he was intimidated.54:9
So he cried out to his Lord, “I am helpless, so help ˹me˺!”54:10
Noah prayed, “My Lord! Help me, because they have denied ˹me˺.”23:26
So because of their sins, they were drowned, then admitted into the Fire. And they found none to help them against Allah.71:25
Noah had prayed, “My Lord! Do not leave a single disbeliever on earth.71:26
For if You spare ˹any of˺ them, they will certainly mislead Your servants, and give birth only to ˹wicked˺ sinners, staunch disbelievers.71:27
So he began to build the Ark, and whenever some of the chiefs of his people passed by, they mocked him. He said, “If you laugh at us, we will ˹soon˺ laugh at you similarly.11:38
You will soon come to know who will be visited by a humiliating torment ˹in this life˺ and overwhelmed by an everlasting punishment ˹in the next˺.”11:39
Whilst constructing the ship, Noah's people continued to challenge him but just as disbelief and stubbornness characterised their existence in this life, it will in the next too.
Allah's Messenger ﷺ said, "Noah and his nation will come (on the Day of Resurrection and Allah will ask (Noah), "Did you convey (the Message)?' He will reply, 'Yes, O my Lord!' Then Allah will ask Noah's nation, 'Did Noah convey My Message to you?' They will reply, 'No, no prophet came to us.' Then Allah will ask Noah, 'Who will stand a witness for you?' He will reply, 'Muhammad and his followers (will stand witness for me).' So, I and my followers will stand as witnesses for him (that he conveyed Allah's Message)." That is, (the interpretation) of the verse below. [Bukhari 3339]
And so We have made you ˹believers˺ an upright community so that you may be witnesses over humanity and that the Messenger may be a witness over you. We assigned your former direction of prayer only to distinguish those who would remain faithful to the Messenger from those who would lose faith. It was certainly a difficult test except for those ˹rightly˺ guided by Allah. And Allah would never discount your ˹previous acts of˺ faith. Surely Allah is Ever Gracious and Most Merciful to humanity.2:143
Once Allah's Messenger ﷺ stood amongst the people, glorified and praised Allah as He deserved and then mentioned the Dajjal saying, "l warn you against him (i.e. the Dajjal) and there was no prophet but warned his nation against him. No doubt, Noah warned his nation against him but I tell you about him something of which no prophet told his nation before me. You should know that he is one-eyed, and Allah is not one-eyed." [Bukhari 3337] This is narrated by Abu Hurairah as "Shall I not tell you about the Dajjal a story of which no prophet told his nation? The Dajjall is one-eyed and will bring with him what will resemble Hell and Paradise, and what he will call Paradise will be actually Hell; so I warn you (against him) as Noah warned his nation against him." [Bukhari 3338, Muslim 2936]
Of the ark, Thauri said that Noah was commanded to build the ark 80 cubits in length, paint it with tar inside and out. Also that its bow should be curved so it could sail easily at sea. Qatadah said its length was 300 cubits by 300 cubits width (as in the torah). Hasan Basri said 600, whilst Ibn Abbas said 1000 cubits. Some suggest, unanimously according to Ibn Kathir, that it was in fact 30 cubits and had 3 stories; each deck being 10 cubits in height. The first deck was kept for animals and cattle, the middle for humans and the upper deck for birds.
Noah took with him on the ark every kind of animal, male and female, so that they could survive. He also took those of his family that did not disbelieve (and any other believers).
And when Our command came and the oven burst ˹with water˺, We said ˹to Noah˺, “Take into the Ark a pair from every species along with your family—except those against whom the decree ˹to drown˺ has already been passed—and those who believe.” But none believed with him except for a few.11:40
Noah prayed, “My Lord! Help me, because they have denied ˹me˺.”23:26
So We inspired him: “Build the Ark under Our ˹watchful˺ Eyes and directions. Then when Our command comes and the oven bursts ˹with water˺, take on board a pair from every species along with your family—except those against whom the decree ˹to drown˺ has already been passed. And do not plead with Me for those who have done wrong, for they will surely be drowned.”23:27
Then when you and those with you have settled in the Ark, say, “All praise is for Allah, Who saved us from the wrongdoing people.”23:28
And pray, “My Lord! Allow me a blessed landing, for You are the best accommodator.”23:29
So, Noah followed Allah's command.
And he said, “Board it! In the Name of Allah it will sail and cast anchor. Surely my Lord is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”11:41
And ˹so˺ the Ark sailed with them through waves like mountains. Noah called out to his son, who stood apart, “O my dear son! Come aboard with us and do not be with the disbelievers.”11:42
Before them, the people of Noah denied ˹the truth˺ and rejected Our servant, calling ˹him˺ insane. And he was intimidated.54:9
So he cried out to his Lord, “I am helpless, so help ˹me˺!”54:10
So We opened the gates of the sky with pouring rain,54:11
and caused the earth to burst with springs, so the waters met for a fate already set.54:12
We carried him on that ˹Ark made˺ of planks and nails,54:13
sailing under Our ˹watchful˺ Eyes—a ˹fair˺ punishment on behalf of the one ˹they˺ denied.54:14
Noah's son, Yam the brother of Shem, Ham and Japheth, persisted in his disbelief and so was left behind. Some said his name was Kenan, there is discussion as to who this son mentioned in the Quran is. Either way, he was a wrongdoer, disobeyed his father and his teachings.
And ˹so˺ the Ark sailed with them through waves like mountains. Noah called out to his son, who stood apart, “O my dear son! Come aboard with us and do not be with the disbelievers.”11:42
He replied, “I will take refuge on a mountain, which will protect me from the water.” Noah cried, “Today no one is protected from Allah’s decree except those to whom He shows mercy!” And the waves came between them, and his son was among the drowned.11:43
And it was said, “O earth! Swallow up your water. And O sky! Withhold ˹your rain˺.” The floodwater receded and the decree was carried out. The Ark rested on Mount Judi, and it was said, “Away with the wrongdoing people!”11:44
Noah called out to his Lord, saying, “My Lord! Certainly my son is ˹also˺ of my family, Your promise is surely true, and You are the most just of all judges!”11:45
Allah replied, “O Noah! He is certainly not of your family—he was entirely of unrighteous conduct. So do not ask Me about what you have no knowledge of! I warn you so you do not fall into ignorance.”11:46
Noah pleaded, “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking You about what I have no knowledge of, and unless You forgive me and have mercy on me, I will be one of the losers.”11:47
When no one was left of the disbelievers, Allah commanded the earth to swallow up the water.
It was said, “O Noah! Disembark with Our peace and blessings on you and some of the descendants of those with you. As for the others, We will allow them ˹a brief˺ enjoyment, then they will be touched with a painful punishment from Us.”11:48
Abdullah Ibn Amr Ibn Al-As narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "When the death of the Messenger of Allah Noah approached, he admonished his sons: 'Indeed I would give you far reaching advice, commanding you to do two things, and warning you against doing two things as well. I charge you to believe that there is no god but Allah and that if the seven heavens and the seven earths were put on one side of a scale and the words "there is no god but Allah" were put on the other, the latter would outweigh the former. I warn you against associating partners with Allah and against pride."
