Jeremiah was from the family of Levy, son of Jacob.
Allah tells us that He made a declaration to the Children of Israel in the Scripture, meaning that He had already told them in the Book which He revealed to them, that they would cause mischief on the earth twice, and would become tyrants and extremely arrogant, meaning they would become shameless oppressors of people.
When evil acts overtook the Israelites, Allah revealed to Prophet Jeremiah that he should stand before his people and exclaim a message. The message explained that their stubborn disobedience was a grave sin. Allah showed them mercy giving them time to repent for as long as he did, solely because of the righteousness of their forefathers. He asked them what small enjoyment did they gain from disobedience and has anyone ever suffered from obedience from Allah. He then warned of a terrible punishment that was coming to them. Allah was to send a powerful army, whos language they would not understand and whos might they could not overcome.
When they continued to pay no heed to Jeremiah's warnings and conditions worsened, he warned them again. They did not listen and instead imprisoned him.
So, when the Israelites committed transgression and aggression, Allah gave their enemies power over them to destroy their country and enter the innermost parts of their homes. Their humiliation and subjugation was a befitting punishment, and your Lord is never unfair or unjust to His servants. They had rebelled and killed many of the Prophets and scholars.

It was said that when Nebuchadnezzar found Jeremiah imprisoned and he explained his story of warning his people and their rejection, Nebuchadnezzar released him and exclaimed how bad it was to reject a prophet. After all this, Jeremiah told those who remained to repent and asked Allah to accept their repentance. Allah revealed He would not do so, and that only those who are true believers would stay in the land. Yet, they did not care and left Jeremiah, further disobeying Allah.
From this point, the Israelites were dispersed throughout different lands. Some went to Hijaz, some in Egypt. Those in Egypt were further captured by the armies of Nebuchadnezzar, along with Israelites he found hiding around Morocco, Syria, Palestine and Jordan - including Daniel who is the next prophet we mention here.
And We gave Moses the Scripture and made it a guide for the Children of Israel, ˹stating:˺ “Do not take besides Me any other Trustee of Affairs,17:2
˹O˺ descendants of those We carried with Noah ˹in the Ark˺! He was indeed a grateful servant.”17:3
And We warned the Children of Israel in the Scripture, “You will certainly cause corruption in the land twice, and you will become extremely arrogant.17:4
When the first of the two warnings would come to pass, We would send against you some of Our servants of great might, who would ravage your homes. This would be a warning fulfilled.17:5
