And We gave him back his family, twice as many, as a mercy from Us and a lesson for people of reason.38:43
For his patience, it is narrated from Abdullah bin Abbas that Allah gave him clothing from heaven. His wife came back and did not recognise him. He told her who he was saying Allah had returned to him his body. Ibn Abbas said he was given back his wealth and children but doubled. Wahb bin Munabbih said he was told by Allah to wash himself in some water to be cured and to make a sacrifice for his people who disobeyed Allah concerning Job. So, when Job was commanded to strike the ground with his foot (38:42) a spring emerged and he washed himself with that water.
And remember Our servant Job, when he cried out to his Lord, “Satan has afflicted me with distress and suffering.”38:41
˹We responded,˺ “Stomp your foot: ˹now˺ here is a cool ˹and refreshing˺ spring for washing and drinking.”38:42
After his recovery, Job lived for another 70 years in the land of the Romans, calling people to the oneness of Allah.
We are also told of a time where Job became angry with his wife. It was after Satan came in the form of a man who claimed to be able to cure Job. When she told him he, knowing it was Satan, grew angry and in anger made an oath he would hit her 100 times. All his suffering, he had lost his children, wealth, his place within his land, his health and basic abilities, perhaps the suffering resulted in his anger. To prevent him from breaking his oath, Allah mercifully ordered him to lightly tap his wife with a bundle of reeds instead. His wife so kindly looked after him, enduring patiently and so Allah sent this as a mercy to them both.
˹And We said to him,˺ “Take in your hand a bundle of grass, and strike ˹your wife˺ with it, and do not break your oath.” We truly found him patient. What an excellent servant ˹he was˺! Indeed, he ˹constantly˺ turned ˹to Allah˺.38:44
We should be careful of the oaths we make in anger. It is through mistakes of prophets and non-prophets that we are preserved for us to gain guidance and wisdom, learning from their mistakes - they too were all humans.
Ibn Jarir and others say that Job died at 93 but others say he was older. He entrusted his prophetic mission to his son Haumalm then his son Bishr - who many consider to be Dhul-Kifl, the next prophet we will cover.
