Frost damages plants by freezing the water inside their cells, causing it to expand. This expansion ruptures the cells' walls, leading to the death of plant tissue. Farmers in frost-prone areas invest heavily to protect their crops from this phenomenon.
When temperatures drop below freezing, the ice formation within plant cells disrupts their structure, killing the cells. The extent of damage depends on the plant type and the severity of the frost.
The Quran referenced the destructive power of frost over 1400 years ago:
The good they do in this worldly life is like the harvest of an evil people struck by a bitter wind, destroying it ˹completely˺. Allah never wronged them, but they wronged themselves.3:117
The Arabic word "sirr" (صِرٍّ) specifically refers to cold, frosty wind, emphasizing its destructive impact on crops—a phenomenon only scientifically understood in modern times. How could Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, an unlettered man, have known the scientific effect of frost on plants without divine revelation?
